Diri Says Defection to APC Is in Bayelsa’s Best Interest, Urges Unity and Progress

By Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

Bayelsa State Governor,Senator Douye Diri, has said his decision to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) was made in the best interest of the state, emphasizing that the move was necessary to advance Bayelsa’s unity and development.

Speaking on Sunday during the 14th Bayelsa Thanksgiving Day celebration held in Igbogene, Yenagoa, Diri explained that his decision was guided by a desire for progress, not political gain. He said while some people might not immediately understand the motive behind his defection, it would become clear over time that it was an altruistic decision made for the good of all Bayelsans.

“Someone had to take this decision, and I took it on behalf of Bayelsa,” the governor stated, urging residents to look beyond party lines and focus on the collective growth and peace of the state.

Governor Diri highlighted Bayelsa’s prevailing peace, improved security, and ongoing development projects as reasons for thanksgiving. He noted that his administration has prioritized the completion of inherited projects and initiated new ones, attributing these accomplishments to God’s grace and the people’s support.

He called on Bayelsans to continue backing his administration’s efforts to transform the state, stressing that unity remains essential to sustainable development.

Representing Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, Senior Policy Adviser Funkekeme Solomon commended Diri’s leadership and said Bayelsa’s progress is a reflection of the people’s unity. He encouraged continued cooperation with the administration to achieve lasting peace and prosperity.

Similarly, Minister of State for Petroleum (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, described Diri as a visionary and unifying leader. He said the governor’s defection to the APC came at a strategic time, aligning with the state’s developmental priorities.

Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, also praised Diri’s achievements, describing him as a “godsend to Bayelsa” whose policies have positively impacted the lives of citizens.

The spiritual highlight of the event featured a sermon by Bishop Mike Okonkwo, General Overseer of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission (TREM), who preached on the power of thanksgiving. He assured the congregation that Bayelsa would continue to experience divine favor as long as its people remain thankful to God.

The thanksgiving service was attended by prominent dignitaries, including Senator Konbowei Benson, Head of Service of the Federation Dame Didi Walson-Jack, and Chairman of the Bayelsa Elders Council, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John-Jonah (rtd). Also in attendance were traditional rulers, lawmakers, industrialists, and senior government officials who commended Diri’s leadership and reaffirmed their support for his administration.

The event featured musical performances by renowned gospel artist Asu Ekiye, creating a vibrant atmosphere of worship and celebration.

Governor Diri’s formal reception into the APC is scheduled for Monday, marking a significant milestone in his political journey. The ceremony is expected to attract top government officials, party leaders, and stakeholders across the Niger Delta.
