Expert wants Governors-elect to impact on citizens, economy

A political analyst, Mr Chucks Omeife, has appealed to Governors-elect to focus on issues that would have direct impact on the economy and improve the living standards of the citizens.

Omeife, a former President, Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB), made the appeal in an interview with Daybreak.ng on Wednesday in Lagos.

He said the dividends of democracy needed to reach more people in the country.

Omeife, who called on Federal and state governments to pay more attention to issues that would have positive direct impact on the people, identified the issues as shelter, power and infrastructure.

He said:”Shelter, infrastructure and particularly power, if well developed, will have direct effect on the general economy.

“If the government can improve on the power generation and distribution to ensure steady supply, it will boost the overall economic growth because power has multiple effects on all sectors of the economy.”

Omeife attributed failure of the previous governments to formulating many agenda and polices without translating them into reality to impact on the common man.

He noted that success of government was not about having too many agenda but about focusing on particular a issue with the view to achieving it to transform the lives of the people and economy at large.

“The country had series of good polices in the past but the challenge has been on how to execute/translate the policies to impact on common man.

“Considering the economic situation of the country, a deserved government should be concerned about how to address the electricity and housing challenges of the citizenry.

“Let the government at all levels approach the issue of housing, especially mass housing, with all the seriousness it deserves.

“Citizens will think reason and behave well when they have good shelter over their heads.

“The rampant cases of social crimes can be traced to lack of decent accommodation because a person from a decent home, who has an Image to protect, will not get involved in a crime.
