FG announces six-week partial closure of Lagos–Ibadan Expressway for bridge repairs

The Federal Government has announced a six-week partial closure of sections of the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway to enable urgent repairs on damaged bridge expansion joints.

The closure, disclosed on Thursday by the Federal Ministry of Works, affects Kara Bridge, Magboro Bridge and Arepo–Punch Bridge. The exercise is expected to begin fully on Monday following the mobilisation of equipment and safety materials.

The Ogun State Federal Controller of Works, Michael Komolafe, said the repairs were ordered by the Minister of Works, David Umahi, due to the deteriorated condition of the expansion joints, which he noted had become safety risks and contributed to road crashes. He apologised to motorists for the inconvenience and assured that traffic management measures would be strengthened to minimise disruption.

Komolafe explained that work had already been completed on portions of the Lagos-bound sections of Magboro and Arepo–Punch bridges, while the remaining sections, including the Ibadan-bound lanes, would be handled in phases.

The contractor, CBC Construction Company, said each bridge would take about one week to complete, adding that protective barriers, warning signs and lighting would be installed before diversions begin.

Meanwhile, the Federal Road Safety Corps in Lagos assured motorists of coordinated traffic control during the repair period, warning that traffic violations would attract sanctions.

Authorities urged road users to cooperate and exercise patience, describing the repairs as necessary to improve safety and extend the lifespan of the bridges.
