The announcement was made in a statement on Wednesday by Mohammed Manga, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Information and National Orientation.
As part of efforts to enhance revenue generation and support economic reforms, the Federal Government has officially inaugurated 50 newly appointed Tax Appeal Commissioners.
During the inauguration at the Ministry of Finance Auditorium in Abuja, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, emphasized the vital role of the Tax Appeal Tribunal in ensuring fair tax dispute resolution. He highlighted its importance in attracting investment and creating a business-friendly environment.
“Reducing tax evasion is critical for maintaining trust in Nigeria’s tax system and funding national development. While tax avoidance is legal, tax evasion must be curtailed to preserve the integrity of our tax system,” Edun stated.
He also pointed to improving economic indicators, such as stabilizing inflation, declining food prices, and rising oil production, as evidence of progress under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which aims to drive sustainable growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.
Balancing Revenue Generation and Taxpayer Rights
Speaking earlier, Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Doris Uzoka-Anite, described the Tax Appeal Tribunal as a critical mechanism that balances the government’s need for revenue with the protection of taxpayers’ rights.
“I urge the members of the Tax Appeal Tribunal to bring their expertise to bear in ensuring the realization of the government’s policy objectives,” she said.
Commitment to Fair Tax Adjudication
In response, Tax Appeal Tribunal Chairman, Aderibigbe Adedeji, assured the government that members would discharge their duties with professionalism and thanked President Tinubu for the opportunity to serve.
The inauguration is part of the Federal Government’s broader tax reforms aimed at increasing revenue for critical sectors such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education.
With the powers granted under the Federal Inland Revenue Service Establishment Act of 2007, this move reinforces the government’s commitment to strengthening tax institutions, ensuring a more efficient tax system, and laying the foundation for sustainable economic growth.
