FG to Build 10,000 Housing Units for Healthcare Workers

By Abigail Philip David

The Federal Government has unveiled plans to construct 10,000 housing units for healthcare workers under the *Renewed Hope Medic Cities* initiative.

The project, spearheaded by the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development in collaboration with the Real Estate Developers Association of Nigeria (REDAN), the Federal Ministry of Health, and the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, aims to provide affordable and quality housing for medical professionals nationwide.

Minister of Housing, Ahmed Dangiwa, announced the initiative during a meeting with the leadership of the Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) on Thursday in Abuja. This was disclosed in a statement by the ministry’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Salisu Haiba.

Dangiwa highlighted the challenges healthcare workers face in securing suitable accommodation, particularly in urban areas where medical facilities are concentrated.

“We recognise the struggles healthcare workers endure to secure decent housing, especially in high-demand urban centres. Housing is a basic need that influences productivity, stability, and overall quality of life. Addressing this requires collaboration between the government and professional organisations,” he said.

The initiative is part of the *Renewed Hope Housing Programme*, which aims to expand access to affordable housing for Nigerians.

The minister revealed that over 10,000 housing units are currently under construction in 14 locations nationwide, including 3,112 units in Karsana, Abuja, 2,000 units in Lagos, and 2,000 units in Kano. Additionally, 12 *Renewed Hope Estates*, each with 250 units, are being developed across 12 states, with plans to extend the project to all 36 states.

Dangiwa encouraged healthcare workers to explore various ownership options, including long-term National Housing Funds mortgage loans, rent-to-own schemes, instalment payment plans, and outright purchases. Applications can be made via the project’s portal: **renewedhopehomes.fmhud.gov.ng**.

He further stated that the *Renewed Hope Medic Cities* initiative reflects the government’s commitment to the welfare of healthcare workers under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s *Renewed Hope Agenda*, which prioritises the well-being of medical professionals.

“Your visit reinforces our dedication to creating housing solutions for the heroes who save lives daily,” Dangiwa said.

NARD National President, Dr. Tope Osundara, commended the government’s efforts to address the housing needs of doctors, noting that this initiative could help curb the emigration of Nigerian healthcare workers in search of better opportunities abroad.

Osundara proposed a pilot project in the Federal Capital Territory, involving the construction of 1,000 housing units as a model for other states. He also suggested that some units be built near hospital premises to enable resident doctors to respond swiftly to medical emergencies.

Dr. Suleiman Sadiq, a representative of REDAN and NARD member, explained that the initiative is a collaboration between the Ministries of Housing and Health, the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, and private-sector partners. Construction is set to begin between January and February 2025.

“This project is a significant step toward improving the living standards of healthcare workers. Safe and affordable housing will enhance their morale and productivity, ultimately strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare system,” Sadiq said.
