Fresh Herdsmen Attack In Benue Leaves 9 Persons Dead

A fresh attack on atakpa community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen has left no fewer than nine persons dead and several others sustaining various degrees of injuries.

Day Break learned that unknown gunmen suspected to be herders at the weekend attacked the community, killing nine persons injuring several others after shooting sporadically to scare the people.

Findings showed that thousands of displaced persons are currently taking refuge in Obagaji, Oshigbodu and Ogbaoru communities.

Reacting to the attack, the Member, Benue State House of Assembly representing Agatu and Deputy Majority Leader, Hon Godwin Edo who condemned the act described it as barbaric and uncalled for.

The Legislator who made the condemnation while briefing Journalists on the incident lamented that the incessant attacks on his constituents is becoming unbearable.

Hon Edo called for establishment of Military formation at Otakpa to secure lives and property of the citizens. He appealed to people of the area to remain calm and not take laws into their own hands but allow security agents to do their work.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations officer, Benue State Command, DSP, Sewuese Aneene who confirmed the incident said Policemen have been deployed to the area to restore peace.
