Fuel Subsidy: Trade Union Threatens Government with Two-Week Protest Notice

By Daniel Edu

The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has issued a stern warning to the Federal Government, setting a two-week deadline for the conclusion of negotiations, and threatening to initiate protests if no significant progress is made by August 19.

TUC President, Festus Osifo, addressed journalists in Abuja, cautioning that the union’s aim is to protect its members and the public from continuous hardship caused by the prevailing economic challenges.

The TUC has already formed technical committees on various crucial matters such as cash transfers, intervention funds, reduction of the cost of governance, energy, and power (including the development of compressed Natural Gas, CNG, as an alternative to PMS), as well as the fixing of refineries. There are also technical committees on education, health, and mass transit.

Osifo emphasized the urgency of fast-tracking government action and processes to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians. The government had initially given a timeline of eight weeks, beginning from June 19, but progress has been slower than anticipated.

The TUC president stressed the need for political officeholders to lead by example, particularly in the face of the harsh economic conditions affecting the country. He highlighted concerns regarding the proposed N40 billion and N70 billion budgets meant for the purchase of vehicles for National Assembly members and their welfare package, urging the government to prioritize the well-being of Nigerian workers and the masses.

The TUC’s primary focus is on implementing policies that will reduce the cost of living for Nigerians, while advocating for alternative and cheaper energy solutions like CNG and palliatives to improve people’s lives. They also call for a reduction in the cost of governance, with leaders leading from the front and demonstrating fiscal responsibility.

In conclusion, the TUC President stressed that Nigerians demand policies that will alleviate their economic burdens, rather than actions that would exacerbate their struggles.
