Gary Neville has shared his thoughts on Lisandro Martinez’s performance after the Argentine featured in an unfamiliar midfield role during Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa on Sunday.
The 27-year-old has been carefully eased back into the first-team setup following a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a knee injury.
Martinez Impresses in Midfield
Martinez was introduced at half-time at Villa Park, replacing the injured Bruno Fernandes in United’s Premier League clash. He slotted into a two-man midfield alongside Manuel Ugarte, demonstrating a level of versatility that quickly caught the eye.
His showing offered manager Ruben Amorim a valuable alternative in midfield, especially with Casemiro and Kobbie Mainoo unavailable. Later in the second half, Martinez also partnered debutant Jack Fletcher, helping to steady United’s midfield despite the eventual defeat.
Neville’s Verdict
Analyzing the performance on Sky Sports, Neville applauded Martinez’s seamless transition into midfield and his immediate impact on the game.
“He is enjoying himself in there. He does the first thing well to win the ball, strides forward and hits across it, which means it is moving away from goal,” Neville said.
He added that United looked the stronger side in the opening stages of the second half, noting their increased comfort and control during that spell.
Fans React
Supporters on social media largely agreed with Neville’s assessment, praising Martinez’s composure, confidence on the ball, and willingness to drive forward from midfield. Some even suggested he could become a long-term option in the role, with comparisons drawn between his ball-carrying ability and Ugarte’s more conservative style.
Others, however, pointed to the broader squad issues, arguing that United still need reinforcements in midfield when the January transfer window opens.
Overall, Martinez’s successful adaptation to a new position highlighted his growing importance to United as the club continues to manage injuries and adjust its lineup.
