Get rid of bad breath with these 5 foods and drinks

Bad breath can be an embarrassing issue, but with the right dietary choices, you can prevent it from becoming a problem.

While certain foods like onions, garlic, and fish can contribute to unpleasant mouth odors, others have properties that help combat bad breath.

Your diet plays a crucial role in determining the freshness of your breath. Here are five foods and drinks that can help keep your breath smelling pleasant:

1. Fruits and Vegetables:
High in fiber and water content, fruits and vegetables stimulate saliva production. Apples, pears, carrots, celery, and leafy greens are particularly effective choices. Saliva helps wash away food particles and bacteria in the mouth, reducing the likelihood of bad breath.

2. Yogurt:
Yogurt, especially varieties containing live and active cultures (probiotics), can help inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria in the mouth. Opt for plain yogurt with no added sugars for best results. Research from the International and American Associations for Dental Research showed that consuming three ounces of yogurt daily for six weeks reduced hydrogen sulfide, a major contributor to bad breath, by 80%.

3. Green Tea:
Green tea contains polyphenols that help reduce the sulfur compounds responsible for bad breath. Enjoy a cup of green tea between meals to freshen your breath and aid digestion. However, be cautious with black tea, as excessive consumption can lead to dry mouth, exacerbating odors.

4. Spices and Herbs:
Before the invention of chewing gum, natural herbs and spices were used to mask bad breath. Ancient remedies, such as a mouth rinse created by Hippocrates using wine and herbs, illustrate the effectiveness of herbs like parsley, spearmint, and rosemary, as well as spices like fennel seeds and cloves, in freshening breath. These can be consumed raw, added to meals, or used as mouthwash.

5. Water:
Since bacteria thrive on food remnants in the mouth, simply rinsing after meals can help combat bad breath. Aim to drink around two liters of water daily to maintain proper hydration. Adequate water intake naturally flushes away food particles, bacteria, and other odor-causing substances, keeping your breath fresh.

By incorporating these foods and drinks into your diet regularly, you can effectively combat bad breath and enjoy long-lasting freshness.
