Gmail for Android and iPhone just received an incredible new look

By JOSEPH CAREY

Gmail is Google’s email client that is incredibly popular.

Last year the software was granted a huge update that not only introduced a new aesthetic for desktop users, but also a host of new functions, too.

The new Gmail harnesses the power of machine learning to deliver features such as Smart Compose.

Smart Compose aims to suggest complete sentences for the user based on context.

When typing, the response Gmail believes should be sent is highlighted in a light grey colour.

If the user wants to use the sentence that has been suggested, they can press the tab button to immediately harness it.

Moreover, the app will also intelligently “nudge” users about old emails, essentially highlighting messages that have not been replied to that could be of importance.

Discussing Gmail’s improvements, Google said: “New AI-powered features in Gmail, like Nudging, Smart Reply and high-priority notifications, can now help you spend more time on work that matters.

“Most of us get more emails than we can deal with at one time, and sometimes things slip through the cracks.

“With Nudging, Gmail will proactively remind you to follow up or respond to messages, making sure you don’t drop the ball.”

While some of Gmail’s best new features were available on mobile devices, it was certainly desktop users that received the biggest upgrade when the software was last overhauled.

But now the American tech giant has announced its Gmail app for mobile devices is being granted a substantial design overhaul, making it more intuitive and contemporary.

Google has insisted the new aesthetic should allow fans to quickly view attachments and switch between work and personal accounts.

Discussing the change, the Mountain View firm stated: “If you’ve used Gmail on the web in the past year, you probably noticed its new features that were designed to help you get things done quickly.

“With machine learning, Gmail can help you draft emails faster using Smart Compose, or reply to messages quicker with suggested responses generated by Smart Reply.

“It can also ‘nudge’ you to follow up on emails with subtle reminders in your inbox, and notify you to reply to threads so that you can prioritise what’s important or overdue.

“Today, we’re kicking off the year with a new look for Gmail on mobile, too. As part of the new design, you can quickly view attachments—like photos—without opening or scrolling through the conversation.

“It’s also easier to switch between personal and work accounts, so you can access all of your emails without breaking a sweat. And just like on the web, you’ll get big, red warnings to alert you when something looks phish-y.”

Google has declared the new look for Gmail will arrive for all users in the “coming weeks”.

It will be available for iOS and Android hardware.
