Gov. Eno Sacks Ibom Power MD Over Prolonged Blackout

By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State has dismissed the Managing Director (MD) of Ibom Power Company Limited (IPCL), Engr. Meyen Etukudoh, following a three-day blackout that caused significant disruption to businesses and residents despite substantial government investments in the power sector.

Official Statement

The Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Enobong Uwah, announced the termination of Etukudoh’s appointment in a statement, directing him to hand over company properties and documents to the Commissioner for Power, who will oversee the firm until a new MD is appointed.

Governor Eno expressed disappointment in Etukudoh’s performance, stating that he failed to demonstrate the innovation required to revamp the state’s energy sector in alignment with the administration’s ARISE Agenda blueprint.

“As part of the ongoing restructuring exercise to align the machinery of government with the ARISE Agenda in the power sector, His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, has relieved Engr. Meyen Etukudoh of his appointment with immediate effect,” the statement read.

Allegations Against the State Government

The dismissal comes amid speculation that Etukudoh’s recent statements may have contributed to his removal. He had reportedly alleged that the blackout was caused by the gas supplier’s refusal to pump gas to the power company due to unpaid debts by the state government.

Analysts suggest this public indictment did not sit well with the government, potentially influencing the decision to sack the MD.

The prolonged blackout has drawn criticism from residents and business owners, with many urging the state government to urgently address issues in the power sector.
