Groups Commend Niger State Governor’s Handling of COVID-19

The Federation of West and South Saharan African students, College of Bishops and Clergy Council as well as some Civil Society Organisations have commended Niger State Governor, Sani Abubakar Bello over for his proactive approach to safeguard the people of the state following the outbreak of the global health crisis COVID-19.

The groups in a joint press conference in Abuja addressed by the Benin Republic Coordinator of West and South Saharan African Students, Mr Hayatu Tanko Limman and its Nigerian counterpart, Mr Fidelis Semaka said it was satisfied with the concerted efforts by the Niger state government in protecting the lives of citizens through massive sensitisation.

The coordinators maintained that prior to the outbreak of the global health crisis, the Niger state government had enhanced the general security which provided conducive environment needed for citizens’ social welfare and particularly students. The duo further expressed the forums satisfaction with the consistent channels of sensitisation activities of the Niger state government to halt further spread of the COVID-19 in the state.

Explaining that the joint press conference was convened at the instance of Civil Society Organisations, Clergy and International Students Federation with a view to appraise states and federal governments efforts so far on Covid-19 awareness and more importantly on security, the duo said the groups unanimously passed a vote of confidence on governor Sani Abubakar Bello.

Collaborating the views expressed by the international student’s body, the director of student affairs of Save Nigeria Movement, Mr. Daniel Terseer Tamen urged the governor to maintain the tempo. “There is nothing any Government can offer to her citizens beyond health and security, every other thing will only follow when the environment is secured and this what His Excellency Sani Abubakar Bello is doing”.

He further pledged unalloyed support of civil society organisations to the Niger state government to enhance the effective actualisation of the government blueprints.

Responding on behalf of the College of Bishops and Clergy Council, Bishop Oduma Effiong posited that the Niger state government has led by example through her sensitisation activities on COVID-19 despite lean resources available to her. The clergy maintained that the efforts of the Niger state government were glaring given the statistics of infections as compared to other states.

“We call on traditional leaders, opinion influencers and sundry to join the effort of the governor to bring back socio economic stability in the state. We are committed to providing the highest level of moral support to the governor to succeed.

“As clergy who are close to the grassroots, that would be our contribution to achieve the overall objective of the Niger state government”, the Clergy pledged.

The International student body further emphasized that they were in the country for ‘on-the spot ‘assessment of governments efforts in the fight against COVID 19 and general security of citizens at all levels.

“By what the Niger state government has demonstrated, it shows commitment to serve the people and above all, it reassures the younger generation of a brighter future if all leaders go by the example of Gov Sani Abubakar Bello”
