Gunmen abduct travellers in Ekiti community

Gunmen numbering about seven have struck along Irele Ekiti Road, in the Ajoni Local Council Development Area of Ekiti State, whisking away four travellers to an unknown destination.

Sources said the four travellers were on their way to Ibadan, Oyo State, around 11 am on Sunday from Kogi State where they had attended an event when the incident happened.

The sources said the gun-wielding kidnappers waylaid the travellers at the Irele Ekiti end of Irele-OkeAko part of the road and whisked them to the forest.

A source said on Monday, “We have not heard anything from the gunmen since Sunday. We are hoping they will get in touch with their families possibly for ransom.”

A community leader in Irele-Ekiti,  who identified himself only as Kehinde, confirmed the abduction.

He lamented incessant attacks by gunmen in the area, calling on the government to beef up security in the axis.

Kehinde urged the Ekiti State Governor, Biodun Oyebanji, to impress on the military to provide an outpost to safeguard the area against the rampaging gunmen.

The Amotekun Corps Commander, Brigadier General Joe Komolafe (retd), who confirmed the incident, said, “Operatives of the corps are combing the forest in the area to rescue the victims and apprehend the culprits.”
