Unidentified gunmen have kidnapped Rev. Father Basil Chukwuemeka, a Catholic priest, at Nkpor Junction near Onitsha in Anambra State.
Eyewitnesses reported that the priest was abducted from his vehicle while driving in the area.
State Police Command spokesman, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident in a statement. He noted that the Commissioner of Police, Nnaghe Obono Itam, had addressed the situation during a conference with Catholic priests in Onitsha.
Ikenga stated, “The Anambra Police Command has launched a manhunt for the abductors and is working towards the rescue of Reverend Fr. Basil Chukwuemeka, who was kidnapped at Nkpor Junction, Onitsha.”
He added, “The Command is collaborating with eyewitnesses in the ongoing operation.”
The Commissioner of Police assured the Catholic community that the Command is committed to rescuing the priest unharmed and apprehending the kidnappers.
