Harry, Meghan to attend final event before giving up royal duties

Must read

Prince Harry and his wife Meghan are expected to join his grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, on Monday for the couple’s final event before they step back from royal duties.

Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, the Duchess of Sussex are scheduled to join the queen and other British royals at a ceremony in London’s Westminster Abbey to mark Commonwealth Day.

They announced in January that they plan to step back from royal duties and lead a more independent, private life based mainly in Canada from  spring.

Most of the 54 states in the Commonwealth, which was formed in 1949, were once ruled directly or indirectly by Britain. The queen has headed the organisation since 1952.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in a statement to mark Commonwealth Day said the diversity of the commonwealth span six continents and makes up a fifth of all global trade.

“As an institution uniting 2.4 billion people across 54 countries, the Commonwealth is unique in the diversity of its partnerships.

“We are tackling some of the largest global challenges through the Commonwealth, from combating climate change to preventing cybercrime, and creating a brighter future for the next generation,’’ Raab said.
