The Health Impact Initiative has launched the Ɗanmoɗi Eye Care programme in Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State, aimed at improving access to eye health services and reducing preventable blindness in rural communities.The programme was officially unveiled by Dr. Hafiz Mukhtar Jahun, Chief Impact Officer of the Health Impact Initiative, during a launch event held in Jahun. The initiative is a humanitarian intervention designed to complement the Jigawa State Government’s healthcare efforts under the administration of Governor Malam Dr. Umar A. Namadi, particularly in line with the state’s 12-Point Agenda, which prioritises good health and economic prosperity.
According to Dr. Jahun, Ɗanmoɗi Eye Care was conceived to bridge gaps in eye healthcare delivery, especially among underserved populations who lack access to specialist services. He noted that visual impairment remains a major but largely preventable public health challenge in many rural communities.During the first phase of implementation, the Ɗanmoɗi Eye Care programme provided services to more than 380 beneficiaries across Jahun Local Government Area. Beneficiaries received comprehensive eye care services, including cataract screening and surgeries, as well as the distribution of essential medications.
Other eye conditions treated under the programme included glaucoma, refractive errors, conjunctivitis, eye infections, dry eye syndrome, allergic eye diseases, and minor ocular inflammations. The intervention also focused on early detection and timely management to prevent long-term visual complications. Dr. Jahun explained that plans are already underway for a second phase of the programme, which will expand coverage to reach more communities and deepen the overall impact of the initiative across Jigawa State.“ The goal of Ɗanmoɗi Eye Care is to ensure that no one loses their sight due to conditions that are preventable or treatable,” he said. “We are committed to people-centred care and sustained collaboration with government and other stakeholders.”The launch ceremony attracted a wide range of government officials and stakeholders from the health sector and beyond.
Among those in attendance were the Technical Adviser on Health, Hon. Isa Surajo, and the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Malam Hamisu Gumel.Also present at the event were the Personal Physician to the Governor, Dr. Naziru Abdul Wahab; Salihu Atafi (Commander); and the District Head of Jahun. Other dignitaries included the Senior Special Assistant on Health for the Dutse Emirate, Special Assistants on Health Monitoring for Jahun and Yankwashi, the Special Assistant on Markets Development, and the Special Assistant on Higher Education Monitoring for Jahun and Kafin Hausa Local Government Areas. Representatives of security agencies, members of the media, community leaders, and hundreds of well-wishers also attended the event, underscoring broad support for the initiative. Health stakeholders at the event commended the Health Impact Initiative for its proactive approach and described Ɗanmoɗi Eye Care as a timely intervention that aligns with the state government’s health priorities.The Health Impact Initiative reaffirmed its commitment to improving community eye health through accessible, affordable, and sustainable services. The organisation stated that Ɗanmoɗi Eye Care will continue to work closely with relevant stakeholders to reduce avoidable blindness and visual impairment across Jigawa State.
