Sulaiman Abubakar Gumi, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives representing the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency in Zamfara State, has officially left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defection was confirmed on the House floor by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, who read Gumi’s letter of resignation during the plenary session on Wednesday. Gumi cited the PDP’s internal struggles, which he said have disrupted the party’s structure in his constituency. He explained, “The PDP in my constituency has two chairmen—one unconstitutionally removed, the other defecting with me—leaving the party without structure.”
Gumi emphasized that the lack of stable leadership in the PDP has made it challenging to effectively represent his constituents and fulfill his democratic duties, prompting his decision to switch to the APC.
