The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has taken legal action against Jimi Lawal, a former senior adviser to Nasir el-Rufai, the immediate past governor of Kaduna State. Lawal faces five counts of corruption and money laundering involving over N65 million.
Investigators allege that in 2018, Lawal diverted N10 million from the Kaduna State Accountant General’s Operational Account to a company account where he was the sole signatory. Additionally, he misappropriated N47.8 million from the Kaduna State Ministry of Finance and transferred it to the same account.
Lawal also reportedly misused N7.3 million from the Kaduna State Internally Generated Revenue account and gave false statements to ICPC investigators in October 2024. These actions violate the Money Laundering (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, and the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, 2000.
The ICPC will prosecute Lawal, two co-defendants, and Solar Life Nigeria Limited, the implicated company.
