igoche Mark Backs Athletes’ Insurance, Condoles Kano

Mr. Igoche Mark, a prominent basketball promoter and the initiator of the Mark D’ Ball Basketball Championship, extends his heartfelt condolences to the government and people of Kano State following the tragic loss of 22 athletes and officials who were returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

This unfortunate incident occurred on Saturday at Mun Musa Shigowa, just a few kilometers from Kano municipality.

In his statement, Mr. Mark expressed his deep sorrow: “I am profoundly saddened by the tragic loss of these talented athletes and dedicated officials. As someone who has been involved in sports, I fully appreciate the commitment and passion that athletes bring to their endeavours.”

He continued, “My thoughts and prayers are with the families of the deceased, and I wish a swift recovery to those who were injured. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the inherent risks that athletes face, underscoring the urgent need for measures to safeguard their welfare.”

Mr. Mark conveyed his condolences to the Kano State Government and its citizens, stating, “May the souls of the departed rest in peace, and may their legacies inspire future generations of athletes.”

He further urged the Federal Government, through the National Sports Commission, to prioritize the safety and welfare of athletes. “It is imperative that we make life insurance coverage for athletes a mandatory requirement,” he emphasized. “Such a policy would provide essential financial protection and peace of mind for athletes and their families in the face of unforeseen circumstances.”

By implementing proactive measures, we can work towards preventing similar tragedies in the future, allowing athletes to concentrate on their training and performance without unnecessary concerns. “Athletes are the backbone of our sports industry, and it is our collective responsibility to protect and support them,” he added.

In closing, Mr. Mark expressed hope that this tragedy would serve as a catalyst for meaningful change, urging the sports community to emerge stronger and more united in the pursuit of athletic excellence
