The Kaduna State University (KASU) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has suspended its strike, which began on February 18.
In a statement released on Monday, the chapter’s chairman, Dr. Peter Adamu, confirmed that the decision was reached on Saturday following progress in negotiations with the state government.
Adamu explained that the government had demonstrated goodwill by releasing funds to cover 60% of the withheld salaries from September 2017 and the Students Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) supervision allowance for five sessions.
Additionally, the government committed to a timeline for settling outstanding payments, including five months’ withheld salaries (May–September 2022), promotion arrears, Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), pension remittances (2009–2019), death benefits, and Group Life Assurance.
The ASUU chairman also noted that the government pledged to implement wage awards and grant full autonomy to the university.
The union expressed gratitude to Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani for his intervention, as well as to the university management, the Commissioner for Education, and other stakeholders who facilitated a swift resolution.
Following the suspension of the strike, Adamu urged all academic staff to resume work and continue contributing to the university’s academic progress.
