Kano State Govt. Mulls Second Phase of Agro-Pastoral Project, Seeks Islamic Development Bank Support

By Jabiru Hassan

The Kano State Government has indicated plans to launch the second phase of the Kano State Agro-Pastoral Development Project (KSADP), citing its significant achievements over the past five years.

The proposed second phase is expected to include additional agricultural components not covered in the initial phase. The first phase was jointly funded by the state government, the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB), and the Lives and Livelihoods Fund (LLF).

State Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Danjuma Mahmoud, revealed this while receiving a delegation from the Islamic Development Bank’s Abuja regional hub and the Federal Ministry of Finance. He said the government is motivated by the project’s extensive infrastructural impact and its success in improving access to sustainable livelihoods.

“The impact on poverty alleviation is deep and significant. For example, when a woman receives a few goats through the program, within a year or less, the number multiplies—this has real impact in rural households,” Dr. Mahmoud stated.

He emphasized that Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf treats issues related to KSADP with urgency, ensuring that farmers continue to receive tangible benefits. Mahmoud assured continued collaboration with the Islamic Development Bank and LLF to sustain development efforts in the state.

Leader of the visiting delegation, Daniyar Abylkhan, said the mission was in Kano to work with the KSADP Project Management Team on issues such as the utilization of project savings, its exit strategy, and unresolved matters surrounding counterpart funding.

Abylkhan noted that the team visited several project sites and observed firsthand the positive reception from beneficiaries.

“The Kano project has become a model. In fact, some states in Nigeria are requesting the Islamic Development Bank to replicate the project—essentially to copy and paste it in their own states,” he remarked.
