KASU Lecturers Announce Two-Week Warning Strike Over Welfare Concerns

By Milcah Tanimu

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Kaduna State University (KASU) has decided to initiate a two-week warning strike in response to unresolved welfare issues.

In a letter addressed to KASU Vice-Chancellor Abdullahi Musa and signed by ASUU Chair Peter Adamu and Secretary Peter Waziri, the union outlined their grievances. The decision to strike was made during a congress meeting held on Thursday.

The lecturers are protesting the non-payment of five months’ salaries from May to September 2022, as well as 60% of their September 2017 salaries and other withheld payments. Additional issues include unpaid Earned Academic Allowances from 2018 to the present, unremitted pension contributions from 2009 to 2019, and the absence of Group Life Insurance for deceased academic staff since 2019.

The notification stated that the warning strike has been approved by the ASUU National Executive Council, which is scheduled to meet at the University of Ibadan from August 2 to 4, 2024.
