Kebbi State Governor Signs Landmark Minimum Wage Law: A New Era for Workers

By Laiatu Augustine Bamaiyi

In a groundbreaking move for the welfare of workers in Kebbi State, Governor Dr. Nasir Idris has officially signed into law a new minimum wage of N75,000. This historic decision was made during a ceremony at the Government House, attended by Mr. Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), and other executive members who were in the state for a crucial meeting.

The governor’s directive for immediate implementation of the new wage was clear, instructing the State Accountant General, the Ministry of Finance, and the Ministry for Local Government to ensure that workers begin receiving this increased pay within 72 hours. “This new minimum wage is a promise fulfilled and will take effect from October,” Gov. Idris stated confidently.

Reflecting on his administration’s commitment to labor, the governor acknowledged the NLC’s support during his election campaign, emphasizing its significant role in his electoral success. “I promised that I would not fail you, and I reaffirm my dedication to utilizing Kebbi’s resources wisely, with integrity,” he declared.

The decision to set the minimum wage at N75,000 was reached after extensive discussions within a joint committee formed by representatives of both labor and the state. The committee initially proposed three potential wage levels: N70,000, N72,000, and N75,000, ultimately choosing the highest figure to align with benchmarks set by the NLC and Trade Union Congress.

In response to the announcement, NLC President Joe Ajaero praised the governor’s commitment, describing it as a positive example for Nigeria’s political landscape. He noted that while some states, despite receiving greater financial allocations, remain at lower wage levels, Kebbi has taken a commendable step forward. “Under Governor Idris, Kebbi is becoming a beacon of development and positive news,” Ajaero remarked.

The NLC leader urged workers to reciprocate this generous wage increase with diligence, loyalty, and a commitment to civil service standards. He emphasized that the implementation of this wage is not just a financial boost but a call for enhanced productivity within the public sector.

The Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Yakubu Bala-Tafida, who also chairs the Minimum Wage Committee, presented the committee’s report to the governor, highlighting the collaborative effort that led to this significant policy change.

As Kebbi State embarks on this new chapter, the governor’s pledge to uphold the rights of workers and ensure timely payments resonates throughout the state, promising a brighter future for all citizens.
