Kwara Assembly summons contractors, Commissioner over poor projects execution

Kwara State House of Assembly on Tuesday, summoned some contractors handling major projects across the state to appear before it on Friday this week over poor quality of work.

Also summoned to appear before the legislature on the same day is the state education commissioner, Hajia Fatima Ahmed.

The legislators on day one of their oversight tour of projects executed by the state government said, “This is in respect of what the state legislature described as shoddy work on the rehabilitation of some school projects across the state.”

The House expressed concern over the quality of jobs executed and observed that most fell below specification.

Speaker of the House, Engr Yakubu Danladi Salihu, who led one of the teams on the oversight tour to inspect some of the projects declared that, “the level of work done by some of the contractors did not commensurate with money paid to them.”

The lawmakers lamented that, “the renovation carried out at the Government High School, Adeta in Ilorin was below the N330m which the contract was awarded.”

The Speaker, while inspecting the solar panels project at the School of Special Needs, in Ilorin, disclosed that the, “House will look into why the contractor failed to execute the project despite receiving N22m out of the total sum of N32m.”

Some of the projects inspected included road projects at the College of Education, in Ilorin; Kuntu-Adeta, Awolowo-Daudu and 500KVA transformers installed at Adewole and behind KWASU contact office, Zango-Kulende in Ilorin, and the Kwara Broadcasting corporation at Apata-Yakuba, among others.

Another team led by the Deputy Speaker, Raphael Olanrewaju Adetiba inspected among others, the renovation of Ajasse Ipo Comprehensive High School; Government Technical College, Esie; Oro Grammar school and Esie museum road in Irepodun Local Government of the state.
