LG Polls: A’Ibom PDP Ready, Says Party Leadership

By Ogenyi Ogenyi, Uyo

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Akwa Ibom has declared its readiness to contest next month’s local council polls as it officially kicked off its campaign.

Governor Umo Eno, addressing the party’s candidates at the event yesterday, highlighted that his administration’s achievements have provided a strong foundation for their campaigns, which should focus on developmental issues backed by tangible evidence.

Eno emphasized that his ARISE Agenda has established a comprehensive and effective framework for the candidates to follow in their campaigns. He praised the party members as great ambassadors of both the PDP and the ARISE Agenda, urging them to campaign with confidence, based on the administration’s proven track record.

“You don’t need to struggle with your campaign message. Just focus on our outstanding records—records of service, integrity, accountability, and development,” Eno stated. “Campaign on issues; there are plenty to discuss. Avoid mudslinging, focus on what you plan to do for your constituents. Speak less, achieve more.”

The Governor also reminded the candidates of the importance of rural development in their mission to serve at the grassroots level. He encouraged them to uphold accountability and transparency in managing the finances of their respective local government areas, especially in light of the recent autonomy granted to the third tier of government.

Governor Eno congratulated the candidates on their nomination as the party’s flag-bearers and urged them to embrace inclusivity in their approach to foster progress in their local government areas.

State PDP Chairman Aniekan Akpan, before presenting flags to the 31 chairmanship candidates, commended Governor Eno for his achievements so far. Akpan affirmed that the PDP in Akwa Ibom is fully prepared for the October 5 polls and remains the people’s choice, having consistently met their collective aspirations.

“Our dear Governor, we thank you for your excellent strides in the state. The party’s verdict is that you have performed admirably, and we will continue to support your administration,” Akpan said. “Come October 5, PDP is ready, and we shall emerge victorious because the people recognize the great work of our leaders over the years.”

Earlier, the Chairman of the Congress Coordinating Committee, Engr. Uwem Okoko, highlighted that the candidates were selected through a credible, fair, and inclusive nomination process. He also noted the increased representation of women and youth among the party’s nominees, reflecting a commitment to diverse leadership.

In their response, the 31 chairmanship candidates, represented by the Uyo LGA candidate, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo, expressed gratitude to Governor Eno and the PDP for the opportunity to represent the party. They promised to focus on issues throughout the campaign.
