Navy Seizes N500M Drugs, Arrests 3 in Akwa Ibom

By  Milcah  Tanimu

The Nigerian Navy’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Ibaka, Akwa Ibom, successfully impounded illicit drugs and chemicals valued at N500 million, arresting three suspected drug dealers in the process. The operation took place on Monday during a routine patrol in the Bendero and Uta Uyata areas.

Captain Uche Aneke, the Commanding Officer of the base, reported that the suspects were caught on a boat carrying 125 sacks of industrial chemicals, including crystalline ammonia, and 62 cartons of contraband drugs. These included 820 tubes of Pethidine (containing opium) and 24,800 bottles of Codeine syrup, believed to be smuggled from Cameroon into Nigeria.

Aneke emphasized the Navy’s commitment to eradicating maritime crimes under the leadership of Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla. The Nigerian Navy continues to cooperate with agencies like the NDLEA and Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) in tackling criminal activities in Nigerian waters.

Following the bust, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) confirmed that the suspects would undergo further investigation before facing prosecution. The Nigeria Customs Service also commended the Navy’s efforts in curbing illegal activities in the region.
