NCAT begins training in Drones operation

The Nigerian College of Aviation Technology (NCAT) says it will soon begin training of personnel on the operation of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) popularly known as Drones.

The college Director-General, Capt. Abdullahi Mohammed, made this known on Wednesday in Lagos, while highlighting the modest achievements of the college since his appointment three years ago.

Mohammed said that the college was still waiting for the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) to finalise it before it could begin the training.

The director-general said that the training was necessary because of the security challenges in the country.

“As you know that there are security challenges as to the use of drones; so office of the security adviser is monitoring closely the importation and operation of drones.

“Our training will focus on knowledge of the regulations so that the operators will know their limitations on the usage.

“The limitations has to do with how they can operate the drones and the types, because they come in sizes and shapes,” he said.

Mohammed said that the regulatory aspect was important because an individual could not be allowed to purchase all types of drones.

He said the college would also provide house zone training for people that would operate them safely and securely.

Mohammed said the college had also introduced training for Airport Rescue and Fire Fighting personnel.

According to him, the process of installing full automatic fire simulator for the training is ongoing.

“We also intend to introduce training in search and rescue operations.

“Also, other disasters management agencies have been going abroad for training.

“There are new technologies coming up; in keeping with this advancement, the college always procure new and up-to-date equipment,” he said.

Mohammed noted the new NCAT Bill was still before the National Assembly as an Executive Bill submitted by President Muhammadu Buhari.

He said the passage of the bill would greatly assist in the enhancement of the recognition of the college status.

According to him, the college will now be recognised as a tertiary institution qualified for TETFUND sponsorship of some of its infrastructure needs and staff training. (NAN)
