Next Chelsea Manager: Blues Settle on Top Target as Two Names Ruled Out

Chelsea have reportedly stepped up efforts to appoint a new head coach following the dismissal of Enzo Maresca, with Liam Rosenior emerging as the club’s preferred candidate.

According to a report by Football.London on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Rosenior moved to the top of Chelsea’s shortlist after Maresca’s relationship with senior club officials broke down. While poor results played a role, sources say internal disagreements and communication issues were central to his exit.

Maresca’s 18-month spell at Stamford Bridge unravelled quickly. Tensions escalated after he described enduring “the worst 48 hours” of his tenure and subsequently failed to attend a post-match press conference following a draw with Bournemouth, a move that reportedly angered club executives. He was also involved in disputes with the club’s medical team over player availability, while a run of just one win in seven Premier League matches ultimately forced Chelsea’s hand.

The developments have cleared the path for Rosenior, who is currently in charge of Strasbourg. The 41-year-old is said to be the bookmakers’ favourite and already operates within Chelsea’s ownership structure, with Strasbourg also owned by BlueCo. Club officials are understood to admire his tactical acumen, composed demeanour, and strong man-management skills.

Rosenior’s previous spells at Derby County and Hull City, along with his recent experience in France, have further strengthened his case. Although he lacks the high-profile pedigree of some former Chelsea managers, there is confidence that his communication style, leadership qualities, and focus on youth development would resonate with supporters.

Chelsea are keen to finalise an appointment swiftly. However, if talks are not concluded in time, assistant coach Willy Caballero is expected to take charge of Sunday’s Premier League clash against Manchester City.

Other candidates have been discussed, including former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fàbregas, but the current Como manager is not believed to be a serious option. Roberto De Zerbi has also been ruled out, with the club eager to avoid the kind of public friction that marked Maresca’s tenure.

While appointing Rosenior may be viewed as a gamble compared to past elite managers such as José Mourinho, Thomas Tuchel, and Antonio Conte, Chelsea’s hierarchy reportedly believes his profile aligns with their long-term vision.
