NiMet’s Weather Forecast: Dust Haze and Thunderstorms Expected Nationwide

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather report predicting moderate dust haze with reduced visibility and localized thunderstorms across Nigeria on Friday.

In the northern region and North-Central states, the forecast indicates a horizontal visibility range of 2 – 5 km, posing potential risks for both road and air travel. NiMet emphasized the importance of taking precautions due to the presence of suspended dust particles.

The agency’s statement on the weather forecast for Friday, January 12th, highlighted:

– Moderate Dust Haze with a horizontal visibility range of 2 – 5 km over the Northern region and the North Central states throughout the forecast period.
– Patches of clouds in the hazy atmosphere are expected in the morning hours over the inland cities of the South and the coastal states.
– Prospects of localized thunderstorms over parts of Delta, Bayelsa, and Rivers states in the afternoon/evening periods.

NiMet specifically cautioned individuals with asthma and respiratory issues to exercise caution and limit outdoor exposure in light of the prevailing weather conditions.

For airline operators, NiMet encouraged them to stay informed with the latest weather reports to ensure effective operational planning. Additionally, the agency advised disaster risk managers, agencies, and the general public to take proactive measures to prevent potential loss of lives and property.
