“NLC slams Tinubu’s hypocrisy on wages and private sector salaries.”

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) expresses concern over President Bola Tinubu’s contradictory stance on wage awards and salary increases. In a national broadcast following the petrol subsidy removal, Tinubu promised wage awards to workers, but NLC President Joe Ajaero calls it a sign of hypocrisy.

Ajaero’s statement titled ‘President Bola Ahmed Tinubu speech, not the silver bullet that Nigerians expected’ criticizes Tinubu’s failure to match promises with actions. Despite pledging to review the national minimum wage with labor unions, the government has not shown a firm commitment to negotiate in good faith. Labor has been forced to negotiate with empty chairs on the government’s side during scheduled meetings.

The NLC leader emphasizes that the sub-committee on wage award remains uninaugurated and has not yet met. This contradiction raises concerns over Tinubu’s sincerity in addressing workers’ demands while praising the private sector for raising salaries.
