Nollywood Dominates on TikTok in Africa

By Milcah Tanimu

TikTok, the popular short-form video platform, has recognized the significant impact of Nigeria’s Nollywood industry and honored it with a month-long celebration in November. The platform showcased the influence of Nollywood through success stories from key figures and publishers who have excelled on TikTok. The month culminated in the Nollywood Summit on November 23, where TikTok highlighted the power and creativity of the Nigerian film industry.

During the summit, 100 key stakeholders, including publishers, media representatives, studios, and performers, gained insights on utilizing TikTok for global success. The platform has played a crucial role in promoting Nollywood, with the Nollywood hashtag amassing over 6.9 billion video views and more than 280,000 published videos. This success positions Nollywood as a rising star in the global movie industry, potentially rivaling Hollywood and Bollywood in popularity and success.

Renowned Nigerian actors and creators, including Eso Dike, Jim Iyke, Kate Henshaw, and Chidi Mokeme, emphasized the platform’s role in connecting with a broad and varied audience globally. TikTok’s unique features and global reach offer Nollywood stakeholders the opportunity to increase visibility, drive engagement, and attract new opportunities for collaborations and monetization.

The Nollywood Summit on TikTok serves as a testament to the platform’s commitment to supporting and empowering the Nigerian film industry, providing a platform for its talented individuals to showcase their creativity on a global scale.
