Northern CAN Warns Kwara Church Attack, General’s Killing Could Deepen Nigeria’s Insecurity

By Achadu Gabriel, Kaduna

The Northern chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has warned that the Kwara church attack and the recent killing of a senior military officer could further destabilize Nigeria, as the country faces a renewed surge in violent incidents targeting civilians and security personnel.

The warning comes after gunmen attacked a Christ Apostolic Church (CAC) in Kwara State, killing worshippers and abducting several others. In a separate incident, a General was murdered by ISWAP terrorists in Borno State, while schoolchildren were abducted in Kebbi State.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Joseph John Hayab, expressed deep sorrow over the rising wave of violence. He said the incidents serve as painful reminders of Nigeria’s persistent security crisis and the vulnerability of both civilians and security forces.

Rev. Hayab stressed that the trauma endured by families who have lost loved ones or whose children remain in captivity is immeasurable. He assured affected families that the association is praying for comfort, healing, and the safe return of all abducted individuals.

While commending the Nigerian Armed Forces for their continued sacrifices, Northern CAN warned that the resurgence of attacks appears to be a calculated attempt by criminal groups to further destabilize Nigeria. The association urged the military not to allow these incidents to weaken their resolve.

Rev. Hayab called on newly appointed security chiefs and frontline troops to intensify operations against insurgents, bandits, and other armed groups threatening national peace. He emphasized the need for renewed determination and strategic coordination.

He also appealed to the Federal Government to scale up efforts to protect schools, worship centres, and vulnerable communities across the country. According to him, citizens expect decisive action to ensure the perpetrators of these crimes are arrested, prosecuted, and made to face justice.

Northern CAN described the attacks as unacceptable acts of evil that must not be allowed to escalate. The association urged stronger collaboration between security agencies, state governments, and community structures to prevent further tragedies.

The statement also recalled the abduction of Rev. Fr. Bobbo Paschal, the killing of the brother of Rev. Fr. Yero, and additional kidnappings in Kagarko Local Government Area of Kaduna State earlier in the week, underscoring the urgent need for coordinated national action.
