Northern Governors Convene to Address Insecurity and Commiserate Over Airstrike Tragedy

The Northern Governors’ Forum, comprising governors from 19 Northern States, convened in Kaduna to discuss pressing issues such as insecurity, agriculture, and oil exploration in the region. Hosted by Governor Uba Sani, the meeting marked the first gathering of the governors since their election in the May 2023 general elections.

Chairman of the Forum, Governor Muhammad Yahaya of Gombe State, condemned the accidental airstrike in Kaduna’s Igabi LGA, expressing condolences to the victims in Tudun Biri. Governor Yahaya stressed the need for intensified efforts by regional governors to combat insecurity, addressing challenges like kidnapping, banditry, communal clashes, and terrorism affecting the North.

While commending the Federal Government’s actions against insecurity, Governor Yahaya emphasized that more must be done at the regional level to ensure the well-being and development of the Northern people. He pledged that the Forum, under his leadership, would thoroughly investigate the Tudun Biri incident, ensuring compensation for victims and implementing preventive measures.

Governor Uba Sani, as the chief host, highlighted the urgency of addressing the security situation in the North. He called for the establishment of a Command and Control Centre to coordinate joint operations against terrorism and related crimes in the region.

Additionally, the Northern Governors collectively donated N180 million to support the victims affected by the accidental bomb in Tudun Biri village, Igabi LGA. During the meeting, Governor Yahaya, alongside his colleagues, presented a symbolic cheque to Governor Sani, underscoring their commitment to assisting those affected by the tragedy.
