The hope of Bayelsa Queens retaining their Nigeria Women’Football League title was dashed on Sunday as they suffered a 1-2 defeat to Delta Queens.
After beating rivals Rivers Angels in the last group A game, the Yenagoa-based club bowed to a resilient Delta Queens side in the Final
Bayelsa Queens had taken the lead in the first half no thanks to an own goal but two goals in the second half ensured they lost the title at the Stephen Keshi stadium in Asaba, Delta State.
Chisom Henry’s 14 minutes own goal put Bayelsa Queens ahead and ended the first half with the lead.
Delta Queens improved their performance in the second half and home fans cheered them on as they equalized in the 67 minutes through Chinaza Agoh’s acrobatic kick.
Agoh completed her brace and sealed the game on 86 minutes of the game and all the efforts of Bayelsa Queens to level the game proved futile.
The result means Delta Queens are the 2023 champions of the Nigeria Women’s Football League. Apart from the N10 million Naira reward they will also represent the country in the West Africa Football Union, WAFU B Women’s Champions League qualifier in August to battle for qualification ticket for the 3rd CAF Women’s Champions League competition.
Earlier, Rivers Angels had spanked Confluence Queens of Lokoja 2-0 to clinch the 3rd place.
Bayelsa Queens will now face Rivers Angels in the Final of the Nigeria Federation Cup on June 21.
