Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called for the nationwide adoption of Akwa Ibom State’s senior citizens’ care initiative following the commissioning of a new elderly centre in Uyo.The facility, built by the administration of Governor Umo Eno and named after the First Lady, was inaugurated during her visit to the state.
Speaking at the event, Tinubu said initiatives that support the welfare of elderly citizens should be replicated across the country. She noted that the centre aligns with her vision of providing safe and supportive spaces for older persons. The First Lady also expressed concern about the challenges faced by many senior citizens, including poverty and health-related difficulties, which sometimes force them into street begging.
She recalled organising programmes for elderly citizens during her 12 years as a senator. Tinubu acknowledged that the project originated from the vision of the late First Lady of Akwa Ibom, Pastor Patience Umo Eno, and commended Governor Eno for continuing the initiative.
Governor Eno said the centre was designed to provide relaxation, recreation, and support services for senior citizens, describing it as a way of recognising their contributions to the state. He added that the state government plans to replicate the project in the other two senatorial districts and intends to send a bill to the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly to institutionalise government support for elderly citizens. The governor also highlighted ongoing welfare initiatives, including monthly financial support and health insurance coverage for elderly residents across the state.
