Power Supply: Youth Group Kicks Against Blackout, Discrimination Of Isheri Magodo Community

Residents of Harmony Estate, Isheri Magodo (Avoseh Zone), Lagos state stormed the office of Ikeja Electric on Tuesday in protest of poor power supply as against what is obtainable in surrounding communities.
The protesters say neighbouring communities like Olowora-Isheri-Gateway Estate in the Magodo-Western area to Unilag Estate all have constant power supply while they languish in darkness.
A prominent youth group in Nigeria, Youth Bureau has backed the protest and frowned at the unfair treatment meted out to people living in Harmony Estate, Isheri Magodo (Avoseh Zone), Lagos state.
Reacting to the development in a chat with newsmen shortly after the protest in Lagos, Youth Bureau through its Publicity Secretary, Saheed Adegboyega called out Ikeja Electric for failing the people of the community, noting “that regular power supply is a right and not a privilege of the people”.
The group also called on “NERC to be alive to their duties as regulatory body of the different electricity distribution companies in the country.”
The protesters had marched from their community to the Ikeja electric office and demanded fair power distribution, noting that they do not deserve the treatment they are getting while their neighbors enjoy electricity.
They peacefully brandished several placards depicting the condition they find themselves in, stressing that the community doesn’t deserve to be in darkness while our neighbors enjoy light.
They also called on the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) to wade into the power blackout situation in Isheri Magodo (Avoseh Zone).
A member of the community who spoke to newsmen on anonymity said: “Ikeja Electric has been giving the community excuses, can you imagine a community in the heart of Lagos not having electricity for six days,” he fumed.
Some of the residents also took to their X account to express concern lack of power supply, calling on Ikeja Electric to end discrimination against the community, while urging NERC to come to their rescue.
X user, @MDAvosehZone wrote, “lease why have we in Harmony Estate, Isheri Magodo (Avoseh Zone), not been having regular power supply? All the communities around us, from Olowora-Isheri-Gateway Estate in Magodo-Western area to Unilag Estate, have constant power supply.
“All we are saying…GIVE US POWER!”.
@aoluwagbemi: “We are demanding for fair power distribution. We don’t deserve to be in darkness while our neighbors enjoy light”.
@EmmyvikU21233: “Omo all my stay in Magodo no steady light….. outside the estate, there is steady light”.
@PauaWale: “Fair Power distribution. The right of every citizen”.
@alomarlotto: “Give us light in harmony estate. This darkness is too much”.
@donald_efiom: “It is becoming very unfair to treat people who are using your prepaid meters and constantly have to sleep in darkness every day! Give us power please!”.
