Premier League: Manchester United Beat Newcastle to Climb to Fifth

London, Dec 27 — A depleted Manchester United returned to the Premier League’s top five after securing a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Newcastle United on Saturday at Old Trafford.

The decisive moment came in the 24th minute when Patrick Dorgu scored his first goal for United with a stunning volley. The Dane pounced on a partially cleared Diogo Dalot long throw, striking from around 15 yards to leave Newcastle goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale with no chance.

Despite missing seven players — including injured captain Bruno Fernandes — United dominated key moments of the contest. The hosts struck the woodwork through Benjamin Šeško and went close again after the break via Diogo Dalot. United were further stretched when Mason Mount was forced off at halftime, but they remained resolute.

Newcastle controlled possession, enjoying 66 percent of the ball, and came agonisingly close to an equaliser when Lewis Hall hit the underside of the crossbar. However, their pressure failed to yield a breakthrough.

The visitors remain 11th in the table with 23 points, while United move up to fifth with 29 points from 18 matches. Newcastle were also unable to capitalise on United’s absentees, which included Fernandes and Africa Cup of Nations-bound players Bryan Mbeumo and Amad Diallo.

The match was the only Premier League fixture played on Boxing Day this year — the fewest top-flight games on the festive date in 43 years — marking a notable break from long-standing tradition.
