President Tinubu Appoints Grace Henry as First Female Chair of Nigerian Legion

President Bola Tinubu has appointed Grace Henry, a 60-year-old retired non-commissioned officer, as the new Chairman of the National Council of the Nigerian Legion, marking a historic first for both women and non-commissioned officers in the organisation’s leadership.

The appointment, effective June 7, 2025, was conveyed through a letter signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and announced on Thursday in Abuja by Chief Abdul Lauya, Senior Special Assistant on Media and Digital Communications to the Chairman, according to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Grace Henry takes over from retired Major General AbdulMalik Jibrin. Chief Lauya described her appointment as a landmark moment for the Nigerian Legion, reflecting the government’s commitment to gender equality and inclusive leadership in national institutions.

Profile of the New Chairman

Grace Henry, born October 5, 1964, retired from the Nigerian Army in 2000 after more than 25 years of service. She previously served as Director of Corporate Affairs at the Legion’s headquarters in Abuja and currently holds the position of National Coordinator of Female Military Veterans of Nigeria.

About the Nigerian Legion

The Nigerian Legion is a statutory body dedicated to the welfare, rehabilitation, and reintegration of ex-servicemen and their families. The council also plays a key role in organising events such as the Armed Forces Remembrance Day, while engaging in advocacy, public education, and select security-related services.

Presidential Charge

President Tinubu, in his message, expressed confidence in Henry’s capacity to reposition the Legion and urged her to leverage her experience in advancing the welfare of veterans and strengthening the organisation’s operations.
