The Union of Retired Police Officers under the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS) has announced plans to stage a peaceful protest at the Presidential Villa next Tuesday if a bill seeking to remove the Nigeria Police from the scheme is not signed into law. The Kaduna State chapter disclosed this in a statement jointly signed by its chairman, retired Chief Superintendent of Police Mannir M. Lawal, and retired Assistant Superintendent of Police Danlami Maigamo.
According to the union, the decision followed its monthly meeting held on March 18, 2026, at the Police Officers’ Mess in Kaduna, where members raised concerns about their welfare and financial conditions.
The statement cited a communication from the Clerk of the National Assembly indicating that, under Section 58(4) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the President has 30 days to assent to or decline a bill. The union said the legislation was transmitted to the Presidency on February 23, 2026, with the deadline expected on March 23.The group called on its national leadership to mobilise members across all states and the Federal Capital Territory for the planned demonstration.
Members expressed concerns over economic hardship, including difficulties meeting basic needs and accessing healthcare, and said the proposed bill aims to establish a dedicated police pension structure outside the CPS.They urged timely action on the legislation to address retirees’ welfare challenges.
