Scores killed as ISWAP terrorists attacks Borno town

Terrorists of a splinter of Boko Haram, the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP) have invaded Gumsuri village in Damboa Local Government Area (LGA) of Borno State, North-East geopolitical zone of Nigeria, with several locals feared killed.

Although complete details of this latest terrorists’ attack are still sketchy, POLITICS NIGERIA learnt that it happened around 7:30PM on Thursday.

ISWAP, a branch of ISIL (ISIS), mainly targets the Nigerian military. It has grown in influence and power in recent years, with an estimated 3,500-5,000 fighters overshadowing the 1,500-2,000 in the late Abubakar Shekau-led Boko Haram faction, according to the International Crisis Group (ICG).

More than 40,000 people have died in Nigeria’s conflict and about two million more people have been displaced from their homes by insurgency-linked violence.

The violence has also spread into neighbouring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a regional military coalition to fight the militants.
