Security Expert Emphasizes Community Participation, Teamwork Among Agencies

By Muhammad Ibrahim, Sokoto

A retired Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Habu Ahmadu Sani, has underscored the importance of community participation and inter-agency teamwork in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.

Speaking to journalists in Sokoto, DIG Sani commended the Sokoto State government for its support to security agencies, particularly in providing operational vehicles and logistics.

He also praised the establishment of community guard policing, describing it as a welcome development. He noted that adequate support and logistics for community guards have boosted their morale and enhanced their ability to complement the efforts of conventional security agencies.

DIG Sani stressed the critical role of communities in maintaining security, emphasizing that they serve as the first line of defense against crime and insecurity. He encouraged residents to engage in security efforts through community policing, neighborhood watch programs, and other local initiatives.

Highlighting the need for teamwork among security agencies, he called for seamless collaboration to share intelligence, coordinate operations, and respond effectively to security threats. He urged all stakeholders, including communities, security agencies, and government officials, to adopt a unified approach to security.

He further noted that building trust between communities and security agencies is essential to encourage public participation in security efforts. He emphasized continuous engagement as a key factor in fostering confidence and promoting effective partnerships.

The retired police chief also acknowledged the critical role of traditional leaders in maintaining security, noting that they are highly respected and trusted within their communities. He stressed the importance of intelligence gathering and urged community members to actively contribute to security intelligence efforts.

DIG Sani outlined several strategies to strengthen security operations in Nigeria, focusing on community engagement, inter-agency cooperation, and effective governance. He called for increased government support for security agencies through the procurement of necessary equipment and logistics. He also emphasized the need for continuous training and retraining of security personnel to enhance their effectiveness.

He advocated for the recruitment of additional security personnel to strengthen security presence across the country. He urged greater community involvement in security initiatives and emphasized the need for regular reviews of operational strategies to address emerging threats.

He also highlighted the importance of improved synergy among security agencies to promote effective collaboration and coordination.

DIG Sani emphasized that by implementing these measures, Nigeria can enhance its security framework and promote a safer environment for all citizens.
