Senator Advocates Increased Rice Production to Bolster Naira and Economy

By Abigail Philip David

Senator Adenigba Fadahunsi, representing Osun East, has urged the federal and state governments to prioritize large-scale rice production as a means to strengthen the naira and reduce the nation’s reliance on imports.

Speaking in Ilase-Ijesa during the distribution of 3,000 bags of rice to groups across his senatorial district’s 10 local government areas, Fadahunsi highlighted the economic and social benefits of boosting domestic rice cultivation.

He noted that meeting local rice demand would reduce the foreign exchange spent on imports, which has been a significant factor in the naira’s depreciation.

“The extent to which rice has become a staple in Nigeria is remarkable, and it is consumed across all demographics,” Fadahunsi stated. “This underscores the need for the government at all levels to ensure rice is locally produced and available at affordable prices. The foreign exchange spent on rice imports is staggering. Local production on a large scale will help reduce this expenditure and strengthen our currency.”

He called on authorities to act swiftly, emphasizing the need for collaborative efforts to enhance local food production and stabilize the economy.

During the event, Fadahunsi expressed optimism about Nigeria’s future, urging beneficiaries to remain hopeful for better days in 2025.

In a statement released by his media adviser, Sam Segun-Progress, the senator’s initiative was described as part of his ongoing efforts to ease the economic challenges faced by his constituents.

“The leadership of market women from Osun East Senatorial District also visited Senator Fadahunsi during the event, expressing gratitude for his support and appealing for further assistance in addressing their needs,” the statement read.

The senator distributed the rice to various groups, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, political figures, and market women, entrusting them with the task of sharing the items among their communities.

Fadahunsi reaffirmed his commitment to improving the welfare of his constituents and called on stakeholders to work together to enhance local agricultural production and ensure economic stability.
