SGF Mourns Former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, CON, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, who died on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in the United Kingdom.

Speaking on behalf of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Senator Akume described the late President as a true patriot, statesman, and disciplined leader who served Nigeria with honour and integrity. He noted that President Buhari’s legacy—spanning his tenure as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, and as a democratically elected President from 2015 to 2023—was defined by his resolute fight against corruption, commitment to national unity, and unwavering dedication to public service.

The SGF said the former leader governed with calm strength, moral clarity, and unmatched devotion to the Nigerian project. “His vision for a better, safer, and more transparent Nigeria inspired millions across the country and beyond, and will continue to inspire posterity,” he added.

In honour of his memory, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, has directed that the national flag be flown at half-mast nationwide for seven days, beginning Sunday, July 13, 2025. The President has also convened an emergency Federal Executive Council meeting for Tuesday to pay tribute to the late leader and reflect on his service to the nation.

On behalf of the FEC, the SGF extended heartfelt condolences to Mrs. Aisha Buhari, the entire Buhari family, and the government and people of Katsina State.

He prayed for Allah to grant the soul of the departed leader Al-Jannah Firdaus.
