The Nigeria Governors Forum has submitted its position on the proposed state police framework to Nuhu Ribadu, with the document set to be forwarded to the National Assembly for legislative consideration.
Chairman of the forum and AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq disclosed this on Sunday after a meeting with Bola Tinubu in Ikoyi, Lagos.
AbdulRazaq said consultations on state policing are ongoing among security stakeholders under the coordination of the National Security Adviser, noting that governors have now formally contributed to the process.
He added that the proposal would guide lawmakers in developing a legal framework for state police, a long-debated reform aimed at strengthening internal security.
The governor reaffirmed the commitment of state governments to work closely with security agencies to combat terrorism, improve infrastructure, and enhance citizens’ welfare.
He also commended Tinubu’s recent state visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as significant for strengthening bilateral relations and attracting investment.
The meeting, attended by about 25 governors, as well as Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, highlighted ongoing efforts to address Nigeria’s security challenges.
The push for state police has remained contentious, with supporters citing improved community-level security, while critics warn of potential misuse by state authorities.
