2023 Presidency: Ngige, Nwajiuba should resign Immediately – NANS

National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has said the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige and the Minister of State for Education, Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, should resign instead of aspiring to be president.

NANS expressed concern that “individuals who do not have any credible past or present can now come out to declare their aspiration for the office of the president without shame,” under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The students maintained that the incumbent President Muhammadu Buhari “has degraded the office of the president so much” that the likes of Ngige and Nwajiuba could put themselves forward for the exalted office.

“Many of such disappointment is the embarrassing declaration of intention and purchase of interest form by the duo of the Minister for Labour and the Minister of State for Education, Mr Chris Ngige and Mr Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba respectively,” they said in a statement signed by the Ogun State Chairman of NANS, Damilola Simeon and made available to DAILY POST on Thursday.

The students stressed that the duo of Ngige and Nwajiuba have “failed to resolve the lingering ASUU strike among many other issues confronting the ministries they both head.”

Simeon said, “By norms, failures like Mr Nwajiuba and Ngige should resign from their positions and tender open apology to Nigerian students and their parents for failing to resolve the crisis in the education sector.

“Unfortunately, they have raised their shamelessness by showing intention to run for the most serious office of the federation.

“Should Buhari be responsive and sensitive to national concerns, both men ought to be greeted with letters of dismissal as Ministers not later than 24 hours after their official declaration. Or what hope lies in a man who has failed in handling just a single ministry aspiring to be the President?”

In the same vein, NANS described as heartbreaking, the fact that the APC dignified “these failed Ministers with access to purchase nomination form of the party,” saying “this is a proof that the party leadership emphasises income generated from sales of form above national interest.”

The statement added: “This goes with the unbelievable fact that the form is sold for 100 million Naira in a country where over seventy percent of her citizens survive below a dollar per day; and a ruling party that has failed in addressing this poverty rate is mocking her citizens through this.

“Our concern is also that these individuals purchasing the interest form of the APC and their counterparts in PDP for as much as N100 million and N40 million, respectively, lack conscience. We believe no individual with legitimate income and good intention would purchase the form to aspire for a presidential job of less than N60 million salary in four years at such amount.

“This is an open mockery of the Buhari anti-corruption crusade facade. Even at this, it is ridiculous that someone like Governor Yahaya Bello and Nyesom Wike of Kogi and River States, who are owing salaries and/or pension could boldly purchase form. This exposes how badly our polity has been brought to its lowest ebb.

“In conclusion, as much as we respect the power of parties to determine their internal affairs, as well as political rights of individuals, it is important that we make our concerns known in the interest of our dear country.”

2023 Presidency: I’ll Hand Over To Whoever Nigerians Elect, Buhari Vows

President Muhammadu Buhari has downplayed claims that he has a favoured candidate for the 2023 elections, saying he will hand over to whoever Nigerians elect.

The President made the remark on Monday while answering questions from journalists after observing the Eid-el-Fitr prayers at the Mambilla barracks parade ground in Abuja.

According to Buhari, he has no special candidate to replace him next year. He, instead, said the one who would succeed him is “the person that Nigerians elect”.

The Nigerian leader equally urged security agencies to redouble efforts in the fight against insecurity.

“We’ll continue to make the environment secure, especially when the rainy season is coming so that farmers can go back to their farms and we wouldn’t have problems of food security,” Buhari said.

“Heads of the services — army, navy, air force, the inspector-general of police, and so on — are very much aware of the situation. It’s their duty to know where the terrorists are and eliminate them.”

Some Presidential Aspirants Should Be In Jail If EFCC Did Their Job – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo says some aspirants for the presidency in 2023 should have been jailed if the country’s anti-graft were more diligent in their duties.

Obasanjo said those who have no integrity in “small things” cannot have integrity in “big things” like the presidency.

Speaking on Saturday in Ogun state during a symposium to mark his 85th birthday, the former president said he has not endorsed any politician for the 2023 presidency.

He added that all presidential aspirants must be “properly x-rayed” and Nigerians be educated to make a choice for the sake of national development.

Obasanjo said: “I read and hear about endorsement and statements in support of candidates that I frankly have not made and forming next political parties that I can never get involved in. I was told that social media credited to me names of three people from the south that I am sponsoring for presidency in 2023.

“My friend, Professor Ango Abdullah, who brought this to my knowledge remarked that he did not believe that I made such a statement because it was out of my character. I have neither named names nor stated my position.

“In a situation like the one we are in, I will not rush into naming names without necessary consultations and well-defined principles and criteria. We need to be clear about what Nigeria needs today and why Nigeria needs it. Only then can we answer the question of how that will inform us of the criteria and characteristics for determining who.

“Since 1999, we have changed from one political party or another we have manoeuvred and manipulated to the point that election results are no longer reflections of the will of the people.

“And we seem to be progressively going back rather than going forward politically, economically and socially.

“We have activities without requite actions and personnel to move us forward. If we continue in the same pattern of recycling, sweet-word campaigning, manoeuvring without the substance of integrity, honesty, patriotism, commitment, outreach, courage, understanding of what makes a nation and what make for development, we will soon have to say goodbye to Nigeria as a nation.

“I cast a cursory look at some of the people running around and those for whom people are running around. If EFCC and ICPC will have done their jobs properly and supported adequately by the judiciary, most of them would be in jail. Any person who has no integrity in small things cannot have integrity in big things.

“Any person who has no integrity in small things cannot have integrity in big things. Fixing Nigeria must begin on the principles of nation building, not necessarily on emotion, sentiments, euphoria, ignorance, incompetence, ethnicity, nepotism, bigotry, sectionalism, regionalism, religion or class.”

The former president added that security, stability, development and a robust economy “can only be taken care of if we get the issue of the nation-building right”.

2023: It’s a Thinking Job Not Bricklaying, I don’t need Physical Strength to be President – Tinubu

The National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has said that he needs more strength psychologically than physically, to be president in 2023.

He stated this when he visited the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Jimoh Olanipekun, to inform him of his political ambition on Friday.

There have been concerns from observers over Tinubu’s health status, following his recent medical trip to the United Kingdom.

However, Tinubu said: “I am not applying for the job of bricklaying or grave digging. I went to school to study accountancy and management.

“I am applying for a thinking job and I will do it right. The job I want to do is for Nigeria to be greater and to be proud of itself.”

In his remarks, the Ataoja of Osogbo said Tinubu has the capacity to be Nigeria’s president, and prayed that God would grant his heart’s desires.

2023: Entire North behind Tinubu’s presidential ambition – Ganduje

Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano State has endorsed the presidential ambition of Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ganduje said the entire North was behind Tinubu’s 2023 presidential ambition.

He said the time was ripe for the North to pay back Tinubu for supporting President Muhammadu Buhari.

The Governor spoke on Monday at the inauguration of an office for Northern Youth Professionals for Tinubu in Kano.

Represented by the Managing Director of Kano Road Traffic Agency, Dr. Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, the Governor assured that Tinubu has the backing of the North.

“Northern Nigeria has no option but to support the Yoruba race and Tinubu. If I ask you to give the name of one person who supported the Northern candidature of Muhammadu Buhari, it will be Tinubu.

“It is time for us to show whether we are truly sons of our parents or not. This is the time and we are with Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“His Excellency, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje is part and parcel of this struggle, so we’re with Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“It was Tinubu who persistently stood firm and ensured that the people of the South-West supported Buhari from the APC primary up to the presidential election where he was victorious,” he said.

Tinubu recently declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2023.

2023 : Decision of South will shake Nigeria — Wike

The Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike has said that when the leaders of Southern part of the country will declare its decision on the 2023 presidency that the country would shake.

Wike also said the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, would not give its presidential ticket to any candidate who would serve only the interest of the wealthy few in Nigeria, adding that desperate politicians who will not serve the interest of many, rather the interest of few are already scheming to be candidate.

The governor made the assertion at a grand reception organised in his honour by the people of Kalabari ethnic nationality at the Abalama School field in Asari Toru Local Government Area on Saturday, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media Kelvin Ebiri.

The governor was conferred a traditional title of Se- Ibidokubo of Kalabari land (He who does good things for Kalabari people) and was performed by the Amayanabo of Abonnema, King Gboko Desreal Bob-manuel.

He reiterated that the stakeholders in Southern will soon make a declarative statement concerning 2023 presidential election.

Wike said: “The day the South will speak, Nigeria will shake. We believe in the unity of this country, but nobody can threaten us. Nobody should threaten us. We believe in the unity of Nigeria and unity of Nigeria must continue.”

2023: Christian Group asks Gov Emmanuel to rescind decision on successor

A group under the aegis of Akwa Ibom State Council of Ministers has dmcalled on Governor Udom Emmanuel bto withdraw his endorsement of his Lands Commissioner, Pastor Umo Eno as his preferred successor.

Addressing a press conference in Uyo on Thursday , President of Akwa Ibom Council of Ministers also known as Soldiers of Christ, Apostle Joseph Nyong accused Emmanuel of not displaying equity and fairness in the purported endorsement.

Nyong explained that former Governor Victor Attah who spearheaded the endorsement was a product of zoning in 1999 and wondered why he connived with connive with Emmanuel to scuttle the same zoning arrangements that benefitted the two of them.

“We also express our disappointment and dissatisfaction at the pivotal role played by the duo of Obong Victor Attah and Oku Ibom Ibibio on the said endorsement.

“Attah as an elder statesman and a beneficiary of zoning can not blow hot and cold at the same time.

“Moreover , the Oku Ibom Ibibio as the custodian of if our traditional institution is expected at all times to be a father to all and maintained neutrality in the political affairs of the state.” The President said.

He insisted that Governor Emmanuel’s endorsement amounted to imposition and disrespect for the will of majority of Akwa Ibom people .

“Such endorsement does not only snack of imposition and direct affront on the political will of majority of Akwa Ibom people but is also clear violation of of the long standing and immutable zoning arrangements in the state .” Nyong said.

He therefore urged governor Emmanuel to search for his successor from Itu- Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency in the interest of peace , equity and fair play.

“There is no gainsaying the fact that it is only Itu/ Ibiono Ibom Federal Constituency that is yet to produce the governor of all federal constituencies within Uyo Senatorial District . It is therefore equitable and fair that it should be micro zoned to the federal constituency of Itu/Ibiono.” He explained.

He said it was a fallacy for the Governor and some few individuals under the guise of “Fathers of faith” to claim that God revealed his choice of successor.

” The God we worship is not an author of confusion not purveyor of crisis and disunity . As a God of orderliness , equity and fairness , it is incongruous and unconscionable for the governor and the so called fathers of faith to use his name to seek validation of an obviously unpopular and unacceptable choice.” He said.

The group threatened that if the public discontentment that followed Governor Emmanuel’s endorsement is not well handled , it might degenerate into avoidable crisis in 2923 general election.

The president said that the church would not stay aloof as few individuals mortgage the peace and stability of the state adding that the right thing should be done by reversing the imposition of a preferred candidate on the state.

” We want to categorically state here that for the purpose of emphasis that as a church , we will not fold our arms and watch few individuals mortgage the peace and stability enjoyed in the state.” He said.

2023: Babangida Supports Saraki’s Presidential Ambition, Give Reasons

Former military Head of State, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida, IBB, has thrown his weight behind the 2023 presidential ambition of former Senate President, Bukola Saraki.

Babangida explained that he supports Saraki’s presidential ambition because he is the “best for Nigeria” in 2023.

He spoke while receiving a delegation of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki, ABS, National Campaign Advocacy Council, led by its Chairman, Prof Hagher Iorwuese and the Director-General, Chief Osaro Onaiwu, at his Minna Hilltop residence.

The delegation was in Minna, Niger State to seek Babangida’s support for Saraki’s presidential ambition.

Describing Saraki as “Self Propelled artillery gun,” the former military Head of State said he has what it takes to lead Nigeria.

According to IBB: “I’m glad to have found people who have defined who a true Nigerian leader should be. This definition was lacking. Am happy you have identified someone who can do the job. The narrative has to change. I know your client very well. I am part of him. His father was very close to me.

“You have zeroed on a good candidate. I call him SP. In the artillery, we have a Self Propelled gun called SP with strategic responsibility and functions. That is who he is.”

Babangida also recalled how Saraki saved Nigeria during the 8th Senate, stressing that he showed patriotism.

He added: “It was Saraki’s efforts that saved the nation from the imminent crisis that ensued. Remember if he was not able to nip the crisis, only God knows what would have happened. It was his intelligence at play that saved the nation. He is the best for Nigeria.

“But a lot of work must be done to convince colleagues and Nigerians on this. You have identified the right person for the leadership of this country. We need a leader that can utilize our rich diversities to our advantage.

“We have abused our diversity and are not able to use it well to our advantage. I believe that the young Saraki has the capacity to bring back this glory to our nation. He has my prayers, he has my absolute support.”
