The meeting lasted for about one hour with no disclosure from both sides on the purpose of the visit.

However, it was gathered that the visit may not be unconnected with the Presidential ambition of the former Vice President of which he is still making wide consultations.

Atiku who is yet to make a formal declaration had taken the Presidential shot twice under the platform of the People Democratic Party. (PDP) but failed.

Atiku from the Hilltop drove to Government House where he paid the state Governor, Abubakar Sani Bello.

“I just discussed with the Governor on the insecurity in the state and from what I heard, it is a very serious and pathetic situation and it is most unfortunate,” Atiku declared.

When asked about his Presidential ambition, Atiku said he would make it known when the time comes.

2023 presidency: We didn’t endorse Yahaya Bello -Northern CAN

The Christian Association of Nigeria in the 19 Northern states and Abuja has described as untrue, reports that it had endorsed Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State for the 2023 presidential election.

The organisation said that from history, it had never adopted any individual for any elective position in the history of elections in Nigeria and won’t do so in the 2023 elections.

The Public Relations Officer of CAN (19 Northern States and Abuja), Chaplain Jechonia Gilbert, made the clarification in a communiqué issued after its Extraordinary Meeting held at Excel Hotel in Abuja, after a condolence visit to its chairman, Rev. Yakubu Pam, on the death of his mother.

The communiqué read, “We want to clarify the recent report in some online papers that Northern CAN had adopted Governor Yahaya Bello of Kogi State as its presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

“Northern CAN, from history, has never adopted any individual for any elective position in the history of elections in Nigeria and neither will it do so this time. Our duty to the Nigerian nation as a religious body is to pray for the peace of the nation and encourage our members to participate in every constitutional process towards nation-building.

“As an organisation with large followership and its members belonging to different political persuasions, it is unthinkable to assume that we have adopted a particular individual who is not even a flag bearer of any political party as our candidate for the 2023 presidential elections.

“We call on the public to disregard such reportage as it is never the thought or imagination of Northern CAN. There has never been any meeting of the leadership of Northern CAN where such a decision was ever taken.

“Following the release of election timetable by INEC, we are here to make our contributions towards nation building by directing our leaders from the three zones in the North to go back and mobilize their members to come out en masse to register so as to enable them to participate in the forthcoming 2023 general elections.

“The strategic meeting is to collate reports from the various zones concerning the security situation in various States that make up the zone with the aim of helping the leadership of Northern CAN in making a bold statement to the nation concerning the worrisome security challenges in the North.

“We pray for Nigerians to close ranks for the purpose of defeating the enemies of Nigerians, especially those killing in the name of religion, those kidnapping for ransom and those raping our women across the country. We must unite and stand together to stamp out this evil from our nation.”

2023 Presidency:Cocodia urges presidency,Senate to pass electoral Act

    Amgbare Ekaunkumo, Yenagoa

As the 2023 general elections draws near, the Presidency and the National Assembly have been called to heed to the yearnings of Nigerians by passing the amended Electoral bill Act, as it will amongst other things, reduce the tension, and other electioneering malpractices that characterize elections in the country.

The call was made by the Special Adviser to the Bayelsa Governor on Political Matters, High Chief Collins Cocodia, on a Glory FM audience participatory program, in Yenagoa on Wednesday.

According to him, what nigerians are clamouring for is free, fair and credible elections that will be totally accepted by everyone, and is not too much to ask for, since the the country’s leadership has assured it will bequeath it to the public, as one of its legacies.

Cocodia in a press statement made available to newsmen in Yenagoa by his press secretary, Patrick Ndubuisi frowned at the lethargic approach by the Presidency and the Senate towards the electoral bill despite feeling the pulses of the same Nigerians they swore to listen to and do their bidding as long since it is for their own interest, adding that the electronic transmission of results will help deepen the nation’s democracy, and entrench a new dawn in electioneering exercise in the country.

He explained that the electronic transmission of results will reduce the level of radical attacks and other violent conduct during elections, stressing that the aftermath of elections witnessed, such as litigations will be reduced if transmission of results is allowed”.

“If we are able to get this e-voting done, I am one hundred percent sure that leaders will become more responsible. Even the issue of vote buying will die prematurely, because where will you see who to give money to? The man sits in his house, takes his phone and votes, both during the primaries and even at the main elections, so if you decide to go to his house to give him money, you are given him free money, because he will still vote his conscience at the end of the day.”

Reacting to the issue of primaries, the Special Adviser on Political Matters was of the view that although both primaries have their advantages, but the indirect primaries is easier and better to conduct, considering funds involvement and crowd control.

High Chief Cocodia also reacted to a report on the huge amount of money spent during the 2019 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and the various Political parties, stressing that the amount will increase, if direct primaries becomes the mode of primaries that is approved by the Presidency, as contained in the bill.

“A report came out not long ago that INEC spent about one hundred and eighty nine billion naira (#189,000,000,000) to conduct elections, while political parties spent about two million dollars ($2,000,000). But if we allow direct primaries, it will amount to lots of security breaches everywhere and the cost will be much more than what we are seeing currently”.

“A situation where we have delegate elections during indirect primaries, where you have the Ward delegates as statutory, and three adhoc delegates, and the local government executives, it’s easier to manage, but for direct primaries, everyone is involved, and believe me that the result you will see will not reflect the reality of the actual number of followers, or those that came out to vote”.

“We have seen some parties sit down in a hotel or a particular house to write down results during primaries, and the figures are outrageous, such that it’s even more than the main elections”.

The former Labour Employment and Productivity Commissioner, expressed worry that the National Assembly will find it difficult to veto the President, Muhammadu Buhari, as the body language of the leadership of the National Assembly shows it is dancing to the tune of the Presidency.

He also charged the Senate President, Ahmed Lawan to exhibit more of a Nigerian character than a party man, and should use his office as the President of the ninth Assembly, to champion bills, such as the amended electoral act bill, for the benefit of the citizenry.

Daybreak news report that, the Special adviser to Governor Douye Diri on political matters was a guest on the program, alongside a lecturer at the Niger Delta University, Engr. Ebipado Sapro-ebi and the President Bayelsa Comrade Family cum the Converner of Think Bayelsa First Campaign, Comrade Daniel Igali.

Soyinka denies endorsing Tinubu for 2023 Presidency

Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka, has debunked claims that he has endorsed the presidential ambition of the National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

Pictures of Soyinka and Tinubu went viral on Wednesday after the former Lagos State Governor declared his presidential ambition.

The post, which first trended in 2021, quoted Soyinka as saying, “I have never involved myself in politics or campaign for any politician but in 2023 I will be involved in politics and campaign for a longtime friend in 1993 NADECO struggle.”

However, Soyinka in a statement entitled, “Season of Fakery Galore,” dismissed the post as fake news, advising the public to disregard it.

Part of the statement read, “Here we go again. This same boring, illiterate public interlopers who lack the courage of their conviction and must steal the identities of their betters. One can only hope that the public has learnt to identify Fake News and join in the urgent task of exposing and disgracing these despicable touts.”

Soyinka noted that he has not thought about the 2023 presidential election or endorsing any candidate for the position.

“For the avoidance of doubt, I have not even thought about 2023, much less inserted candidates into coveted positions. The signature of this latest moron is familiar as he or she does not even know the difference between ‘Laureate and Laurel.’

“This is an ancient forgery being recycled for the umpteenth time. Those who pass it round do themselves and their recipients a disservice. Find something worthwhile to occupy your time.

“In any case, we have no business with politics in the land of the dead, and the most recent information I have on me is that I died sometime last year,” the statement read.

2023 Presidency: Gov David Umahi Declares Interest

Ebonyi State Governor David Umahi on Tuesday declared his 2023 presidential ambition at the State House in Abuja.

His declaration comes about 24 hours after former Governor of Lagos State, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, also indicated an interest in the race.

Both men are members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umahi, speaking at a press briefing after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari, said his presidency will replicate his progressive efforts in Ebonyi at the national level.

He said he intends to bring a business-like spirit into governance.

According to him, President Buhari responded to his interest by asking him to seek the support of the people.

Umahi, who doubles as Chairman of the South East Governors’ Forum, is also canvassing for a political solution to the insecurity problems in the region.

He believes that if the self-acclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, is willing and open to engagement, peace will return to the South East.

This comes a day after a chieftain of the APC, Bola Tinubu, said he had informed President Buhari of his intention to contest the presidential election in 2023.

He, however, declared that he had yet to inform Nigerians of his intention to succeed the President.

According to Tinubu, the President is a democrat and therefore, has not asked him to stop the pursuit of his ambition which for him is life-long.

The APC leader and former Governor of Lagos State stressed that he has the confidence, vision, and capacity to build on the foundation laid by President Buhari to turn around the fortunes of the country.

  • 2023 Presidency: I’m Yet To Make Decision To Contest – Kwankwaso

A former governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, says he is yet to make a decision to contest the presidential election in 2023.

Kwankwaso, in an interview with DW Hausa on Wednesday, said consultations were in progress with appropriate people.

He said: “In this kind of situation we are not rushing to make decisions.

“So, we are critically watching and consulting the right people to advise us and whatever I decide will be communicated to our people.

“We have huge support that is enough to contest for anything.

“We have people everywhere not only in Nigeria. Some people think that we only have people in Kano or in the north, but the truth is we have people in Asia, America and Europe,” Kwankwaso said.

On the rumours circulating that he would dump his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Kwankwaso said there was nothing like that.

“The issue of my decamping to APC has been raised severally at different times.”

“This is not the first time. Many people are saying it and this is worth celebrating in politics that you become the talk of the news all the time.

“It is a symbol of integrity and that people are always with us.

“For now, I’m not aware of this and I’m not in any discussion with anybody about decamping to APC. So, that is it for now.”

He said politics is all about patience and hard work, and that it was normal with the system to experience good and bad situations.

  • 2023 Presidency: I Don’t Care Who Succeeds Me – Buhari

2023 Presidency: I Don’t Care Who Succeeds Me – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday said he does not care about who succeeds him, stressing that 2023 is not his problem.

The president stated this during an exclusive interview with Channels TV.

His assertion is in contrast to former President Olusegun Obasanjo who worked to ensure that late President Umaru Musa Yar’adua succeeded him in 2007 on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

President Buhari, who was asked to say something about the 2023 elections, said: “2023 is not my problem, I don’t care who succeeds me, let the person come, whoever the person is.

“All important things I make sure I put them on record. Nobody should ask me to come and give any evidence in court, otherwise, whoever it is will be in trouble.

“I don’t have a favourite for 2023 in my party, I wouldn’t because he will be eliminated before I mention, it is better I keep it a secret.”

On what legacy he would like to leave behind, the President said: “My legacy is that I will try to make sure we conducted ourselves with integrity, which means we stop all the stealing as much as the system can allow. We’ll stop misappropriation. And for Nigerians, that is very important.”

On the leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) currently under trial and detention, Nnamdi Kanu, Buhari said he could not release him as he would not interfere in the judicial process.

He, however, said the government was open to a political solution if he turned a new leaf.

He said: “There is one institution I wouldn’t try to intervene in, that is the judiciary. Kanu’s case is with the judiciary. But what I wonder is that when Kanu was safely in Europe, abusing this administration and mentioning too many things, I never thought really, he wants to come and defend himself on the accusations he has been making.

“So, we are giving him an opportunity to defend himself in our system and not to be abusing us from Europe. He was acting as if he was not a Nigerian.

“Let him come here and criticise us, Nigerians know I don’t interfere with the judiciary, let him be listened to. For those who are saying he should be released, no, we cannot release him.”

On whether there could be a political solution, the President said: “There is a possibility of a political solution if they behave themselves, we will let them go. But you can’t go to a foreign country and keep on making condescending and incorrect security and economic problems against your country and thinking you will not be held accountable for what you are doing, let him account for what he has been doing.”

Asked whether he expressed any fear about the unity of Nigeria, Buhari said: “I don’t fear for the oneness and unity of this country because from 15 January 1966, I have been in all the troubles of this country including detention for more than three years.

“I think Nigerians, we make noise to get better deals but we know that we are better together than separate. I believe in that.”

On restructuring, Buhari asked the promoters to properly define the concept.

“Those who are calling for restructuring, I want them to define what they mean in their own concept of restructuring, do they want more states? If they want states, they should look at the map of Nigeria, at what expense?

“I have a big problem with the people of the South East, they said they wanted an additional state, I said they should go and look at the map to see how much land we contribute to other states.”

President Buhari insisted that the way to solve farmers/herders clashes was to revive the cattle routes and grazing reserves in the country.

The president stressed the need to go back to the system that recognised cattle routes and grazing areas to solve the farmers-herders conflicts.

He added that grazing routes and water ponds should be secured, saying “One thing about cattle is that after eating grass, they will look for water to drink”.

On climate change, he said Nigeria was susceptible because of the population and size of the country.

He also said that since bandits terrorising the North West zone and some parts of North Central in the country have been designated as terrorists, he had ordered the security agents to go after them in full force.

“In the North West, the same people, the same culture, killing each other, banning grazing. So, I think the only language they understand, we discussed it thoroughly with the law enforcement agencies, with the service chiefs, the Inspector-General of Police, is to go after the terrorists.

‘’We named them terrorists and we are going to deal with them. I believe if you go to those constituencies in the North West and the North Central within the last four weeks, there are improvements in the security,” he said.

He also stated that he would sign the Electoral Act Amendment Bill if the National Assembly added all options to produce candidates, including direct, indirect and consensus.

“Personally, I don’t support direct primary. I want people to have choices. Let them have the three options,” he said.

On the appointment of Dr Doyin Salami as the Chief Economic Adviser to the President, he said the appointee would combine the task with the chairmanship of the Presidential Economic Advisory Council.

He expressed confidence in the ability of Dr Salami whom he described as a “fantastic and committed” personality to provide direction in the current plan to invest massively in agriculture because of the realisation that only 2.5 per cent of arable land is being cultivated.

Buhari, who said he was “adequately aware” of the sufferings and pains of ordinary Nigerians, further underscored the need to embrace agriculture to change the tide.

When asked whether he was satisfied with the current state of electricity in Nigeria, the president said he was not “happy”.

The president, however, said his administration was still working to achieve its set goals on rail, road and power.

“We have to get the infrastructure right. When the infrastructure is not there, there will be no power,” he said.

“The problem of electricity is that TCN is 100 per cent government but what we inherited is what is called DISCOs, they divided the country almost along geo-political zones, what was the basis?

“I can’t find out, the people that owned them, who are they? They are not electrical engineers. They don’t have money. It is a political favour and to remove a system and bring it back is not a joke.”

President Buhari, while defending loans obtained from China, wondered if it was right to turn down an important project like Lagos-Ibadan rail when the administration was working to fix critical infrastructure such as rail, roads and power.

In his words for the youth, the President urged them to go to school, work hard, and think less of getting jobs from the government, saying an educated person is better than an uneducated one.

Asked about what to say about the PDP, the President described the leading opposition party as a “failure”.

On state police, Buhari said he believes that it is not an option for the nation, alluding to the propensity for governors to abuse their powers.

“State police is not an option…Find out the relationship between local government and the governors. Is the third tier of government getting what they are supposed to get constitutionally?

“Are they getting it? Let the people in local government tell you the truth, the fight between local governments and the governors.”

  • 2023 Presidency: Gov Masari Insists On Power Shift To South

2023 Presidency: Gov Masari Insists On Power Shift To South

Katsina state governor, Aminu Bello Masari, has reiterated his position on power shift to the southern part of the country, saying that would help consolidate the nation’s confederation system.

Masari said this while responding to questions from journalist during a media parley held at his residence on Tuesday.

“Let me make my position very clear. This constitution is made for us, not us made for the constitution. Yes, constitution does not say we must shift power, but if you shift have you violated any part of the constitution?”

“I still believe that, from my personal opinion as Aminu Bello Masari, until such a time when we have stable polity, I think rotation or shifting power from time to time will help consolidate our confederation. I support that and I still maintain my stand and I have the constitutional right to make such comment,” he said.

Masari said he was a member of the constitutional conference of 1994/95 during which Federal Character Commission was provided for, adding that he was a member of the transition committee in 1999 and their committee initially suggested that each zone should be given opportunity of five years through the instrumentality of the constitution, but the suggestion did no see the light of the day.

He called on politicians, journalists, religious and traditional leaders to put the interest of the country above their personal interest as 2023 general elections approach.

“We should see politics as a way and means of producing leadership under democratic dispensation. Our politics is still very young, even from independence to date, you are talking of 60 years, which is important in the life of an individual, but in the life of a nation, it should be working progress.”

“We should measure where we were yesterday, where we are today and where we want to be tomorrow. The problem is that we are in a hurry that even before we finish crawling, we want to start running,” he said.

He said politicians needed attitudinal change as they needed to appreciate the responsibilities and burden of leadership as well as the consequences of coming forward to contest for any elective office.

“I believe the journalists in particular, have a very important role to play. For instance, as we approach 2023, the attention being created by the media is the fat salary and allowances of the National Assembly members, not on what the lawmakers are doing or what they supposed to do. So the media created a situation whereby everybody wants to go there because there is money.”

“But to be fair to the media, some of us in the national assembly are also helping in creating that false impression by changing their ways of life in such a way that even their friends become envious,” Gov. Masari said.

IBB stated this when the Osibanjo Grassroot Organization visited him in his Uphill Residence in Minna.

He also stated that the group would continue to pressure on the VP to pick interest in contesting for the presidency in the 2023 general elections.

The Team Leader, Chief Emma Ejiofor, in his speech noted that the Osibanjo Grassroot Organization visited was prepared to work with advice of prominent citizens such as Gen. Babangida, especially because of their sound knowledge and understanding of the country.

“At this moment, Nigeria is in dire need of leaders with conviction and passion for her development and growth,” he added.
