    Road accident claims 6, injures 2 in Bauchi

    Six people have been confirmed dead and two others sustained various degrees of injuries in a fatal motor accident at Kwara village, Bogoro Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

    The Chairman of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Bogoro, Mr Bauchi Yakubu, said the accident occurred when the driver, Aliyu Yakubu, tried to avoid potholes but ended up entering into a ditch after the vehicle had somersaulted.

    “I received a phone call early this morning around 5am that a vehicle, J5 boxer conveying some people and cattle from Taraba to Mararaba Market in Liman Katagum had a ghastly accident in Kwara village. We rushed to the scene of the incident and discovered that some of them had died already while some later died in the hospital. Their corpses are now at the General Hospital, Bogoro,” he said.

    When contacted, the state Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Yusuf Abdullahi confirmed the accident and the number of casualties.

     Abdullahi added that the corpses and the victims were evacuated to the General Hospital, Bogoro where a medical doctor confirmed the death of six persons.

    Five persons have been killed in a fatal crash that occurred at Isma Village, along Bauchi-Jos road in Bauchi State.

    Two other persons sustained varying degrees of injuries in the crash that occurred on Saturday at about 7.50am.

    The Commander, Federal Road Safety Corp, Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, disclosed this to our correspondent on Saturday.

    He said that crash involved two vehicles, a petrol tanker belonging to AIB Petroleum and a private vehicle, a Peugeot 406.

    He said seven people; three male adults, three female adults and one female child, were involved in the crash.

    Abdullahi said the crash was caused by speed violation, adding that it took the FRSC rescue team 26 minutes to get to the scene of the crash.

    “Immediately our rescue team got to the scene after 26 minutes that we were informed, they rushed the victims to the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital for treatment and confirmation.

    “It was when they got to the hospital that a medical doctor confirmed five people; two male adults, two female adults and one female child, dead.”

    Customs seize over N200 million Worth of Contrabands in Bauchi

    The Nigeria Customs Service, Federal Operations Unit, Zone “D” Bauchi has seized contrabands worth over N200 million have been seized from August to date.

    The Public Relations Officer, NCS, FOU, Bauchi, Umar Abdullahi, said this in a statement signed and issued to journalists in the state on Monday, stated that the Federal Operation Unit comprises of Bauchi, Yobe, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Plateau, Benue, Gombe, and Nasarawa States; with headquarters in Bauchi.

    He said that some of the items seized include: 542 bags of 50 kilogrammes of foreign parboiled rice, four sacks containing 165 kilogrammes of pangolin shells, 487 bags of Urea fertilizer and 250 cartons of foreign spaghetti.

    Others are 191 bales of second hand clothing, 110 Jerrycans of Petroleum Motor Spirit popularly known as petrol, 70 cartons of foreign soaps, and 32 Jerrycans of 25 liters of Kerosine, 130 Jerry Cans of 20 liters of engine oil and 10 bags of dried donkey skins.

    Abdullahi said that no fewer than seven vehicles of different brands used in conveying the prohibited items were also seized by the operatives of the service.

    FG doles out interest free GEEP 2.0 loans to 4,000 Farmers, Traders, market women in Bauchi

    As part of efforts to pull out 100,000 Nigerians out of poverty, the Federal Give has began doling out interest free loans to more than 4,000 farmers , traders and market women in Bauchi state, under the second phase of the Federal Government Enterprise Empowerment Programme known as GEEP 2.0

    Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development Sadiya Umar Farouq made symbolic disbursements to some of the beneficiaries on Monday in Bauchi.

    The beneficiaries received amounts ranging from N50,000 to N300,000 and are expected to pay back without interest within one year.

    Also the minister who also disbursed Cash Grants to 5,679 beneficiaries charged them to deploy the funds into profitable small businesses to increase productivity.

    She noted that the programme implemented in close partnerships with State Governments shows the President’s commitment to work with all levels of Governments to address the issue of poverty which today has become a developmental hindrance confronting Nigerians.

    “We are here to flag-off the Grant for Vulnerable Groups (GVG) in Bauchi State, Azare and in Darazo. The GVG is a Buhari Manifesto fulfilment project to all vulnerable groups, to sustain the social inclusion agenda of President Buhari’s Administration on the poor, which is consistent with his compassionate and deliberate National agenda of lifting 100 million Nigerians out of poverty in 10 years.”

    Meanwhile 380 Independent Monitors were also engaged and issued employment letters aa well as specialized monitoring devices to enhance their responsibilities.

    600 Internally Displaced Persons will also receive N50,000 among whom will be Persons with Disabilities and Senior Citizens.

    “The flag-off payment of a one-off N50,000 grant is to selected IDPs under the Youth Empowerment and Social Support Operations (YESSO), with the objective of enhancing their entrepreneurial activities for self employment, create wealth and generate jobs for others. In Bauchi State, 600 beneficiaries will be granted a token N50,000”, Farouq explained.

    Furthermore the Digitized Cash Transfer payment system for the Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT) Programme was launched to create reliable , transparent, accountable and accessible database for seamless disbursement to beneficiaries of the Conditional Cash Transfer.

    World Bank Approves $5.9m for ACReSAL Project in Bauchi

    The World Bank has approved the sum of $5.9 million for the take-off of the Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) Project in Bauchi State.

    The Commissioner for Environment and Housing in the State, Hamisu Mu’azu Shira disclosed this yesterday during an interview with journalists in Bauchi.

    He explained that one of the development objectives of the ACReSAL project for Nigeria was to increase the implementation of sustainable landscape management practices in targeted watersheds in northern Nigeria and strengthen Nigeria’s long-term enabling environment for integrated climate-resilient landscape management.

    The Commissioner applauded the Federal Ministry of Environment for working with the World Bank to come up with the ACReSAL project and reaffirmed the determination of the state government to implement the project according to the guidelines.

    He mentioned some of the activities to be carried out in the implementation of the project to include, tree planting along construction of roads in six local government areas across the senatorial districts of the state, distribution of 6,000 efficient biomass cooking stoves and fuels to avert indiscriminate cutting of trees in communities.

    Shira said the rest include construction of 10 solar powered boreholes and provision of livestock drinking points in 10 animal rearing communities across the state, establishment of three farm produce processing centres to enhance value chain under CRF as well as the provision of grains storage facilities for small farmer clusters among others.

    “We are happy to inform the good people of Bauchi State that World Bank has approved our budget proposal for the take-off of ACReSAL project. As you are aware, Bauchi State is among the 19 Northern States selected to benefit from the project.”

    According to him, “Senator Bala Mohammed must be commended for his support to us to access this approval and has assisted other states too to access their approval because of his commitment in working with all the stakeholders for the commencement of the project in the benefiting states.”

    Pastor injured, Houses Burnt as Riot erupts in Bauchi over Alleged Blasphemy

    A pastor has allegedly been injured and many houses burnt by irate youths who went on the rampage over alleged blasphemy in the Katangan area of Warji Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

    Details of the incident were still sketchy as of the time of filing this report.

    Our correspondent learnt that trouble started when a message was allegedly circulated on social media that a Christian girl in the town allegedly engaged in blasphemy of Islam.

    A source, who spoke to our correspondent on the condition of anonymity, confirmed the incident, saying, “Yes, the incident is true. It is an aftermath of the incident of the alleged blasphemy that happened in Sokoto last week.

    “What I learnt was that a Christian girl allegedly posted and commented on something on social media which has to do with the incident in Sokoto and that was how it started.

    “The situation there is more than tension since many houses have been burnt down. But no life was lost, to the best of my knowledge.

    “A shop which belongs to an ECWA Church in the area was also burnt down. And I learnt that the District Head of the area and the leaders are on top of the situation. The police have also been informed about it.”

    Another source said, “We were at home this evening when we heard shouts from some Muslim youths in their numbers who went on the rampage and besieged an ECWA Church in the area.

    “But Christian youths and others resisted and repelled them but that was after they had burnt down a shop attached to the church. Many houses were burnt down by the rampaging youths.

    “In the process, one of the pastors of the ECWA church was seriously wounded; as I speak to you now, efforts are on to save his life.”

    One of the leaders of the Christian Association of Nigeria in the state also confirmed the incident to journalists in a telephone interview.

    He said that the Commissioner of Police in the state and the Senior Special Assistant to the Bauchi State Governor on Christian Religious Affairs are aware.

    He called on the Christian community in the state not to allow the situation to degenerate.

    Efforts to get a confirmation on the incident from the Bauchi State Police Command proved abortive as several calls put through to the Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, were neither picked nor returned as of the time of filing this report.

    Police Helicopter Crashes In Bauchi Airport

    A police helicopter which took off from Abuja has crashed at the Bauchi Airport, the Accident Investigation Bureau said on Thursday.

    However, no loss of life was recorded, the AIB noted.

    “On 26th January, 2022, Accident Investigation Bureau, Nigeria was notified by Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) about an accident involving a Bell 429 helicopter with Registration Marks 5N-MDA owned and operated by Nigerian Police Force (NPF),” the statement said.

    “The accident occurred on 26th January, 2022 around 7:30pm (Local Time) at Bauchi Airport.

    “The NPF helicopter had departed Abuja at 16:54 UTC for Bauchi with Six persons on board maintaining 5,500ft

    “There were some injuries but no fatality.

    “The investigating agency, AIB-N needs and hereby solicits for your assistance. We want the public to know that we would be amenable to receiving any video clips, evidences, or information any member of the public may have of the accident that can assist us with this investigation.

    “The Bureau will appreciate that the general public and press respect the privacy of the people involved and NOT assume the cause of the accident until a formal report is released.”

    NGO provides medical treatment for 10,000 people in Bauchi

     A Bauchi state-based NGO, Mayaka Health and Education Mobilisation Association (MAHEMA), has provided medical assistance to no fewer than 10,000 patients in two years.

    Alhaji Aminu Abubakar, the Director-General of the association, made this known in an interview with our correspondent on Monday.

    The people, Abubakar said, were treated for high blood pressure, diabetes, hernia, malaria and eye diseases.

    He said that of the figure, 350 patients were treated for eye diseases, adding that while some were operated on, others were given eye glasses and drugs.

    “The treatments were conducted during   our medical outreaches across the 20 local government areas of the state,’’ he said.

    He added that the eye treatment was conducted in collaboration with a Saudi Arabian Makkah eye hospital based in the Bauchi.

    Abubakar said the NGO also conducted a two-week campaign to sensitise the people to the importance of sleeping inside mosquito nets to prevent malaria.

    “We visited no fewer than 60 selected village markets during the sensitisation campaign,’’ he said.

    Abubakar said that during the period, the group trained no fewer than 700 youth on different vocational skills, including leather work, carpentry, tailoring, bead making and construction of aluminum doors and windows.

    “This  is part of our economic empowerment drive towards job creation and poverty alleviation,’’ he added.

    The director-general also said that the NGO distributed food stuffs across some selected rural communities as part of its humanitarian services to the people.

    According to him, the initiative is not aimed at promoting the political ambition of a particular aspirant or political party as our group has no connection with any political group.

    Our correspondent reports that MAHEMA has been working with some international donor agencies like UNICEF and Centre for Emergency Diseases Control (CEDIA) in providing humanitarian services.

    Lassa Fever killed 19 in Bauchi

    No fewer than 19 persons have died of Lassa fever between January and November 2020 in Toro and Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

    This is as the state confirmed 22 positive cases of yellow fever in Ganjuwa LGA out of the 63 samples tested.

    Executive Chairman of the State Primary Health Care Development Agency (BASPHCDA), Dr Rilwanu Mohammed, made the disclosure yesterday while giving a situation update of Lassa and yellow fever in the state.

    Mohammed also said the state has already has received 4 million doses of yellow fever vaccine from the federal government adding that vaccination will be conducted in January 2021 with the target population of ages 1 to 44 who are vulnerable.

    The BASPHCDA chairman added that efforts are on to ensure that the yellow fever outbreak did not spread to other LGAs in the state as well as neighbouring states of Kano and Jigawa.

    He said further that the vaccination for yellow fever will be conducted in 19 LGAs in the state with the exception of Alkaleri which had its vaccination in 2019 due to the outbreak there.

    Rilwanu Mohammed, however, lamented that the Agency is worried because of the apathy being exhibited by people who are refusing to be vaccinated in spite of the education and enlightenment programs embarked upon by the agency.

    HIV/AIDS prevelance rate drops to 0.4% in Bauchi

    The  Bauchi State Government on Tuesday said HIV/AIDS prevalence in the state significantly dropped from 6.8 per cent recorded in 2001 to 0.4 per cent in 2019.

    The Commissioner for Health, Dr Aliyu Maigoro, made the disclosure in Bauchi on Tuesaday at an event to mark World AIDS Day, annually celebrated on Dec. 1 to raise awareness on the scourge and remember those who died of the condition.

    Maigoro said 25,809 people were presently living with the dreaded virus across the 20 local government areas of the state.

    He added that 20,961 of the infected people were receiving treatment at designated health facilities in the state.

    The commissioner noted that of those receiving treatment, 94 per cent had witnessed viral load suppression and expressed satisfaction with the state government effort and collaborators’ effort, saying it was an excellent feat in the fight against the scourge.

    He pledged the state government’s readiness to sustain the effort on Voluntary Caunselling and Testing (VCT) for effective and wider coverage for a HIV-free generation in the near future in the state.

    Maigoro advised couples to sustain the good culture of protective sex, while health workers should always sterilise all medical and other relevant equipment and adhere to the rules on blood transfusion.

    The commissioner attributed the drastic reduction in the HIV/AIDS prevalence in the state to  government’s will and support from stakeholders.

    He pledged the state government’s readiness to collaborate with the organised private sector, civil society groups, philanthropists, as well as donor agencies for effective healthcare delivery to the state.

    Daybreak reports that the theme for this  year’s World AIDS Day is “Global Solidarity, Shared Responsibility.”
