    Jos Killings: No Plans to Evacuate Benue Students from UNI-Jos, Says Gov Ortom

    Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has ruled out the possibility of evacuating students of Benue origin who are currently undergoing studies at the University of Jos, Plateau State following the recent attack on the state capital where over thirty persons were reportedly killed.

    Ortom who made this known at the Government House Makurdi on Wednesday while briefing Newsmen, explained that Benue State Government is monitoring, stressing that it is on top of the situation.

    “We have to follow due process, we can’t just go and evacuate our students there. Plateau State Government has assured us that it is doing everything possible to protect lives and property”.

    Also speaking, Commissioner of Education in Benue State, Prof Dennis Ityavyar said he spoke with the Vice Chancellor of the institution who warned that any student who leave the campus does so at his or her own risk.

    He averred that the President of NUBESS corroborated the position of the VC saying that the school authority has not allowed the students to leave, so evacuating Benue Students from the University was not good enough.

    Piqued by continued killing of innocent people in Benue State by Suspected Herdsmen, Benue students on Friday staged a peaceful protest in Makurdi against the dastardly act.

    The youths who blocked high ways for several hours, carried placards with various inscriptions such as, ” Governor Ortom keep speaking, On Ranching We Stand and Benue will not be silenced” among others.

    Speaking in an interview with Day Break, the President, West African Students Union, Comr. Peter Rumans, who expressed displeasure over the dasterdly acts called on the Federal Government and other West African Leaders to Intervene.

    “We are saddened over the senseless killing of our people. We call on the Federal Government and other West African Leaders to Intervene to save lives otherwise nobody is save in Nigeria and Benue State in particular”.

    The President commended the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom over his resilience in defending his people despite threats from different places.

    ” The Governor has done his best, we have to rise up as students and youths of the state to let the international community hear us”.

    Continuing, he noted that ” Nigeria is not capable of defending us so let the international community defend us, we are being killed every day and nothing is being done about it”.

    Disturbed by the prolonged rift between the federal government and the Academic staff Union of Universities, ASUU, Benue students have staged a peaceful protest to demand for the reopening of Universities in the state.

    Findings by Day Break showed that the protest which lasted for more than an hour witnessed massive turn out of students from deferent universities who marched on the major streets of Makurdi, the Benue State capital.    Day Break learnt that ASUU, had embarked on industrial action on 23rd March, 2020 to protest government’s directive to enroll all members on the Integrated Payroll and Personal Information System, IPPIS.    The union is also pressing home their demand for the implementation of the pact it had entered into with the federal government on the 2012 universities’ Needs Assessment.    A 300 level student of the Benue State University Makurdi who did not want his name published told our correspondent that they are tired of staying at home, hence the need to embark on the protest.

    BREAKING: Benue students protest herdsmen killings

    Benue students have taken to the streets to protest killings in the state by suspected herdsmen.

    They asked the Meyitti Allah Vigilante Group to leave the State.

    The placard-bearing protesters blocked major streets leading to traffic grid lock in Makurdi, capital of Benue.

    They were heading to Government House Makurdi as at the time of filing this report.
