    BREAKING: Nigeria Army arrests eight suspects over kidnap of Plateau monarch

    Nigeria Army Troops of Operation Safe Haven have arrested eight suspects in connection with the kidnap of a traditional ruler in Plateau State, Charles Mato Dakat.

    It has earlier been widely reported that Dakat, a Paramount ruler in Gindiri LGA, was abducted by gunmen who attacked his palace last Sunday around 1am.

    He was, however, rescued in the early hours of Friday.

    According to Punch, Confirming the arrest of the eight suspects in a statement on Friday shortly after the monarch regained his freedom, the Military Information Officer of Operation Safe Haven said, “While the Paramount ruler of Gindiri in Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State, Chief Charles Mato, has been with his abductors, the commander Operation SAFE HAVEN, Major General Ibrahim Ali, placed the troops deployed at Gyanbus on red alert and the hot trail of the perpetrators.

    “Consequently, Eight suspects were arrested in connection with the kidnap incidence and are being interrogated. Following this development, the paramount ruler, early this morning of Friday 31 December 2021, was released by his abductors.”

    The statement added that “Operations SAFE HAVEN is still very much on the ground to ensure all those involved in the kidnap of the traditional ruler are arrested and made to face the full wrath of the law.”

    BREAKING: Bandits kill Lawmaker, kidnap many others along Kaduna-Zaria road

    Notorious Armed Bandits have killed a Kaduna State Lawmaker, Riliwanu Gadagau, along the Kaduna-Zaria Highway.

    Gadagau represents Giwa Constituency of Kaduna State and was the Chairman of the Committee on Local Government and Rural Development in the Assembly.

    He was reported to have been killed on Monday night by bandits who attacked travellers along the road. His body was was later discovered on Wednesday morning.

    According to reports from Channels Television, a relative of the late lawmaker confirmed the killing, stating that his body was found near Mawai, a village just about 13 kilometres from the Kaduna State capital.

    Another traveller, one Sani Dogara was also reportedly killed by the bandits. He was said to be among over 30 travellers abducted by the bandits who laid a siege on the road.

    Although the Kaduna State Police Command is yet to react to the incident, sources revealed that the attack by the bandits on the Kaduna-Zaria highway lasted more than two hours.

    Confirming the incident, the Speaker of the Assembly, Yusuf Zailani, described the death of the lawmaker as devastating.

    In a statement on Wednesday, he revealed that Gadagau died during the attack by bandits along the highway and his body was recovered two days later.

    “This is tragic and painful. We are in deep grief over this sad incident,” said Zailani who condoled with the lawmaker’s family and members of the Assembly over the incident.

    “Our prayers at this time, go to his immediate family. Honourable Gadagau was a young and dynamic lawmaker, who had a passion for his constituency, state and Nigeria. We will miss his vibrant contributions.”

    “Our hearts also go out to those kidnapped in the same operation, believing that they would be rescued by security operatives as soon as possible.”

    BREAKING: Nigeria ex-Senate President dies

    Joseph Wayas, a former president of the senate in the Second Republic, has died at the age of 80.

    According to Christian Ita, special adviser to the Cross River governor on media and publicity, Wayas died in the early hours of Tuesday in a London hospital.

    Ben Ayade, Cross River governor, was quoted as saying Wayas’ death is a “monumental loss” to the state and Nigeria.

    The governor said Wayas left “indelible footprints on the sands of time”.

    As a state, Cross River is in pains as we mourn the passing of our illustrious son. He was a rare gem. Dr Wayas’ demise is indeed a monumental loss to our dear state and Nigeria,” Ayade was quoted as saying.

    “As Senate President, Dr Wayas contributed to the deepening of Nigeria’s democratic ethos through his robust and vibrant leadership of the upper legislative chamber.

    “And since his retirement from active politics, the former Senate President had been playing a fatherly and stabilising role in the politics and affairs of our state.”

    The governor condoled with the family of Wayas and said his death is a “collective loss and the pains a shared one”.

    “We are with you in this moment of grief. We have you in our hearts and prayers,” he said.

    Wayas, born May 21, 1941, served as Nigeria’s senate president between 1979 and 1983.

    The headquarters of a faction of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has been set ablaze.

    The building located along Maiduguri road, in Kano metropolis, is less than three kilometres from a mobile police barrack at Hotoro area, Tarauni Local Government Area.

    It was set ablaze by thugs suspected to be against the APC faction.

    The building housed the head office of the factional group of the APC led by former Kano governor, Ibrahim Shekarau. The faction is opposed by the second faction loyal to the incumbent governor, Abdullahi Ganduje.

    The Kano APC crisis got worse after the state congress, on October 18, produced two factional leaders with one loyal to Mr Ganduje and the other to Mr Shekarau.

    The Shekarau faction had elected Haruna Danzago as chairman while Mr Ganduje’s camp elected Abdullahi Abbas.

    The National Appeal Committee set up by the APC later recognised Mr Abbas as the chairman of the party in the state.

    Not satisfied with the decision of the party, the faction led by Mr Shekarau headed to court, asking for the nullification of the congresses at the ward, local government and state levels conducted by the rival faction and recognition of its own.

    BREAKING: Emirates resumes flight services in Nigeria

    United Arab Emirates carrier – Emirates – disclosed that on Thursday that it will resume its passenger operations between Dubai and Nigeria from December 5, 2021.

    The airline said it will operate to and from its Nigerian gateways with daily flights, providing travellers from Nigeria convenient access to Dubai – a popular holiday and business destination.

    The new move, it was learnt, is a sequel to the resolution of its row with Nigeria on suspension of flights.

    In a statement, the carrier said throughout the pandemic it has been updating passengers with industry-leading health and safety measures at every point of the travel journey as well as helping communities reconnect faster in facilitating economic recovery.

    The airline said it also been working hard to provide up to date, comprehensive travel information to passengers as well as speeding up processes on the ground through digital verification for Covid-19 via the IATA Travel Pass, as well as touchless check-in and biometrics processing.

    The statement reads:” Travellers coming from Nigeria must hold a negative Covid-19 PCR test certificate for a test taken no more than 72 hours before departure.

    “Additionally, the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has specified designated laboratories for passengers departing Nigeria and travellers must obtain their certificate from one of the labs listed here to be accepted on the flight.

    Travellers coming from Nigeria will also need to take another Covid-19 PCR test on arrival at Dubai International Airport.

    “Passengers flying to Nigeria have to meet the requirements of their destination.”

    Armed bandits have launched a fresh attack in Sabon Birni local government area of Sokoto state, burning a resident alive, while attacking policemen with brazen attitude

    Our Reporter reported that  many policemen were also unaccounted for in the attack which occurred on the night of  Wednesday, September 29.

    Confirming the incident, the member representing Sabon Birni East constituency at the state House of Assembly, Sa’idu Ibrahim, said the bandits were now targeting security formations in the area.

    They are now looking for where security operatives are stationed because their morale was boosted by their recent attack on a military formation at Dama where many soldiers, policemen and Civil Defence officers were killed.

    “So they are now attacking places where they know military, police or other paramilitary camped.

    “They shot two persons, including a woman and burnt three others who hid in a grain store; one of them died instantly while the other two are receiving treatment in the hospital

    The lawmaker said the bandits invaded Gatawa because of the presence of the
    “Operation Puff Ader” camp in the area. He added: “As I am talking to you now, many policemen are still missing. We don’t know whether they were abducted or ran away.”

    BREAKING: Gov. Akeredolu orders indefinite suspension of NURTW activities in Ondo

    Ondo Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has ordered indefinite suspension of activities of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in the state.

    He directed all NURTW members are to immediately vacate all motor parks across the state.

    The Governor had last week said the suspension of NURTW and RTEAN activities in motor parks would only last for two weeks.

    Akeredolu, who spoke Tuesday through his Senior Special Assistant on Special Duties and strategy, Dr Doyin Odebowale, said the indefinite suspension would not affect RTEAN.

    Akeredolu said the decision to suspend NURTW activities indefinitely was based on the unruly and uncultured behaviour of the union leaders.

    He said the violent attacks on members and the innocent citizens were unacceptable.

  • BREAKING: UK to return ‘£4.2m Ibori loot’ to Nigeria

    The British Government has resolved to return to Nigeria £4.2million being part of the funds so far recovered from friends and family members of former Delta Governor, James Ibori.

    The British High Commission to Nigeria, Ms. Catriona Laing, who disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja, said this was the first tranche of such planned returns.

    Laing said what is currently being returned were retrieved from friends and family members of Ibori.

    She noted the Ibori case is complicated and the United Kingdom authorities were still working on the total actual amount involved in the case.

    Laing, who spoke at a ceremony for the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between both countries in Abuja, assured more of such recoveries from the Ibori case would be returned to Nigria in due course.

    Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami, who signed for the country, disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the returned loots be deployed to completion of the second Niger Bridge, the Lagos to Ibadan express way and the Abuja to Kano express way projects.

    BREAKING: Buhari writes National Assembly, seeks confirmation of Service Chiefs

    President Muhammadu Buhari has written to the National Assembly, seeking confirmation of the recently appointed service chiefs.

    According to a statement signed by the Special Adviser to the President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Babajide Omoworare, Mr Buhari’s letter to Senate President Ahmad Lawan was dated January 27.

    The presidential spokesperson, Femi Adesina, announced the appointment of the service chiefs on Tuesday.

    Those appointed include Lucky Irabor, a major general, as the Chief of Defense Staff.

    Others are Ibrahim Attahiru, a major general, as Chief of Army Staff, Auwal Gambo, a rear admiral, as Chief of Naval Staff and Isyaka Amao, an air vice marshal, as Chief of Air Staff.

    They replace the immediate past service chiefs led by Gabriel Olonisakin, the then chief of defence staff.

    The resignation of the last set of service chiefs follows cries by Nigerians for their sack. This was due to rising insecurity in the country.
