AFCON: Cameroon come back from 3-0 to beat Burkina Faso, win bronze

The Indomitable Lions of Cameroon pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in the Africa Cup of Nations to save themselves from what would have been an embarrasing end to their campaign, coming from three goals down to draw level and winning 5-3 on penalties against Burkina Faso in the third place play-off on Saturday.

Ambroise Oyongo scored the decisive penalty in Yaounde as the Indomitable Lions atoned for missing three kicks when losing a semi-final shootout against Egypt 48 hours ago.

Goals by Steeve Yago and Djibril Ouattara either side of an Andre Onana own goal gave the Burkinabe a 3-0 lead with 20 minutes remaining.

Stephane Bahoken reduced arrears and then substitute Vincent Aboubakar netted on 85 and 87 minutes to force a shootout.

The Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Egypt, with Liverpool stars Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah on opposite sides, will be staged on Sunday in Yaounde (1900 GMT).

Cameroon coach Toni Conceicao made nine changes to the team that lost on penalties to Egypt after extra time just two days ago at Stade Olembe, the main Yaounde stadium.

The Portuguese retained only goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Samuel Oum Gouet, who was replaced at half-time by leading tournament scorer Aboubakar.

Burkina Faso boss Kamou Malo altered five of the team that started a 3-1 semi-final loss to Sadio Mane-inspired Senegal 24 hours before Cameroon played.

Two of them were enforced with injured goalkeeper Herve Koffi replaced by Farid Ouedraogo while suspended midfielder Adama Guira gave way to Ismahila Ouedraogo.

The countries had met three times before in the flagship African tournament with Cameroon winning twice, including in the opening match of this Cup of Nations, and drawing the other.

It was the third bronze medals play-off for both teams with each winning and losing once in a fixture that Africa has retained while Europe has ditched.

Nigeria reached the final round of the qualification series for this year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup after the Falconets turned back their Cameroonian counterparts 3-0 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja on Saturday.

A brace by left –sided midfielder Esther Onyenezide and one by Precious Vincent sent the Young Lionesses back to Yaounde empty –handed, less than 48 hours after that country’s senior men team was bumped in the semi final stage of the Africa Cup of Nations the country is currently hosting.

Onyenezide struck after 22 minutes, before Vincent increased the worries of the visitors eight minutes from the interval. Onyenezide struck again in the 73rd minute to put the match beyond the Lionesses.

Coach Chris Danjuma and his Nigeria U20 girls will pull no punches when they take on their Cameroonian counterparts in the second leg of their fourth round fixture, as the race for this year’s FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup finals hots up.

Venue is the refurbished MKO Abiola National Stadium, Abuja and kick-off time is 4pm on Saturday, 5th February.

Both teams battled to a scoreless draw in a tough and gritty encounter at the Stade Reunification in Douala on Saturday, 22nd January.

Danjuma said: “We have no choice but to go all out for goals. The Cameroonian team is a strong one but we have worked hard since returning from the first leg in Douala and I believe my girls will get the job done.”

Saturday’s encounter will be the first international match at the MKO Abiola National Stadium since the venue hosted a 2016 Women Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match between the Super Falcons and the Senior Women Team of Senegal in April 2016.

The Falconets require only the minimum win to reach the final qualifying round, where they will square up with the winner between Morocco and Senegal for a place in the finals in Costa Rica in August this year.

Togolese official Vincentia Amedome has been appointed by CAF as the referee. Amedome will be assisted by compatriot Abra Agbedanou (assistant referee 1); Ghanaian Doris Essuman Darko (assistant referee 2) and yet another Togolese Edoh Kindedji (fourth official). Handing over the refugees to Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, yesterday, at a brief ceremony in Amchiide, a border community between Nigeria and Cameroon close to Banki in  Bama Local Government Area in BORNO state.

This formed part of thousands of Nigerians, mostly from Borno, who, since 2014, had fled in batches to Minawao Camp located in Mokolo, far North Region of Cameroon, to escape Boko Haram’s killings.

  • UN officials flay `continued attacks’ on civilians in Cameroon

UN officials flay `continued attacks’ on civilians in Cameroon

Four senior UN officials on Friday condemned continued acts of human rights violations against civilians, including women and children, in the southwest and northwest regions of Cameroon.

The officials are Virginia Gamba, UN Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict; Pramila Patten, Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict; Najat Maalla M’jid, Special Representative on Violence against Children, and Adama Dieng, Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide.

In a joint statement, they expressed “deep concerns’’ about continued attacks against civilians, including extra-judicial killings, torture, arbitrary arrests and destruction of property.

They also deployed retaliatory attacks, rape and other forms of sexual violence that “disproportionately affect women and children in the north- and south-west regions of the country that are forcing many to flee their homes’’.

Reports say 32 civilians, including a pregnant woman and 15 children, were killed in Ntumbo village in the English-speaking northwest region of the country on Feb. 14.

Accusing fingers are pointing at the military, but the Army has refuted claims that the military blatantly killed civilians.

The officials said children continued to be particularly affected by the crisis, referencing reports of school attacks and extensive closures in the affected regions.

They added that information received on the recruitment and use of children by armed actors and their detention for actual or alleged association with armed actors “raise further protection concerns.’’

The Cameroonian conflict, known as the Ambazonia War, started in 2016 when communities in the English-speaking regions launched protests over alleged marginalisation by the French-speaking central government.

Many in the regions felt their voices were not being fairly represented in the central government.

In 2017, separatists in the regions declared the independence of Ambazonia and began fighting against the government.

The UN officials said hundreds of thousands of people are reported to have been displaced in the affected regions, as lack of security worsens the plight of marginalised and vulnerable groups.

They said: “It is urgent to prevent further violence and to protect all women, girls, boys and men from grave violations of international humanitarian and human rights law.

“Severely constrained humanitarian access and limited resources for service-providers has reduced the availability of sexual and reproductive healthcare for women, including urgent treatment for survivors of sexual violence.’’

They urged the Cameroonian government to discharge its primary responsibility of protecting the population by addressing the root causes of violence and ensuring that victims of the attacks are provided with protection and the appropriate assistance.

They further called on the authorities to fully investigate and hold accountable those responsible for the serious violations and abuses that have been committed.(NAN)
